Got a bit bored so I thought I would upload pics of my ps4.1 and show the cooling "mods". the way it looks is just a sticker I bought off ebay, it isn't one full sticker but different parts that stick to the top/tides.

yes , I know the warranty is void and I couldn't be bothered to wait for it to die on me with a valid warrant. saves me flying about sending it off to sony to get another.

I started to do this because when I got my ps4 it was getting ridiculously hot and I didn't want it to die on me. first I looked on youtube to see if anyone else had come up with a cooling mod for their ps4.

1 guy that I came across had done the same thing as what I did, which is where I got the idea. cut out a hole directly where the fan intakes air on the inside.

then I used a fan filter/case to stop the actual filter getting fluff on the inside , although the dust Is still a problem. the black frame holding the filter in place used to be an 80mm fan that I bought from china or hong kong for £3. I ended up just tearing the actual fan out because it was causing more heat than helping keep the temp down.

I also bought a device from ebay that plugs into the fan and then into the fans power source that boosts the fans speed while the ps4 still "thinks" its only moving normaly. couldn't get the top case off though to show the device.

had to set it on blocks so the filter/frame has clearance.

anyone else made mods to help cooling? I have seen water cooling mods on youtube but don't think i'll try those.

also thinking of buying the new model which is more efficient.

all views welcome (Y)

Apart from the fan doesn't intake air there - given that it an centrifugal (blower style) fan rather than a normal axial fan. In intakes through gaps in the band that runs round the sides and front of the console. If it was an intake as you suggest, do you not think there would be some holes already there?

It's not more efficient - cooling system has been tweaked and noise reduced, but at the expense of slightly higher temperatures. Given that no huge changes have been made to the new model (e.g. process shrinks etc), then its reasonable to assume Sony were happy enough with longevity in the first models, that they chose to address noise issues by trading off against slightly higher temperatures.

Honestly, replacing the thermal paste would probably have improved temperature/noise more than this frankenstein job.

as I said , all views welcome

Just not taken on board right?

As stated in my last post - the fan does not intake from that spot. If anything you now have half the cold air that is sucked in from the front being exhausted out of the bottom without cooling anything.

you do seem to have researched it for a more technical view, but what I have done works . just don't know the actual difference.

Not really - just common sense - there are no holes where you have cut - therefore it isn't an air intake.

but what I have done works.

You can't possibly know that. And even if it has somehow improved things, it's more down to the fan "booster" running the fan faster, than the poorly placed air "intake". As stated already - the new PS4 runs the fan less agressively, indicating Sony were fairly happy with temperatures/longevity of the original fan (and therefore no need to run it faster).

just don't know the actual difference.

Which outside of having an expensive thermal imaging camera (e.g. like Digital Foundry used) there is no reliable way of knowing.

There is no reason to mess around with the PS4's cooling - it is nowhere near as susceptible to the problems that the PS3/360 suffered (as these were related to lead free solder - the process of which has now matured).

Not really sure where this thread is going (other than being eventually locked)

Armageus, why does it matter to you what he has done? Its not yours so why pursue an argument?

I honesty don't like it but fair play to the guy for trying something different. If he says it works then hell it works. Who are we to disagree.
