Why did they kill Dave?

UKs longest ever ever earthworm is found at a whopping 15 inches. Dragged out of his earthy home, taken to a laboratory, weighed, photographed, then mercilessly killed to be pickled and then stuffed in a glass display case.

Yeah, died in transport. Can't really blame them for pickling the worm though, better than than throwing it into the bin?

The Lumbricus terrestris was studied at the museum before being euthanised in "the sad bit of science".

Did it? All the stuff I've seen says they euthanised it.
 
Because Dave was the thin end of the wedge. Given the right conditions over several million years, Dave's progeny could have become 50 foot-long maneaters and taken over the world.
