Installed Memory 3.00GB (2.00 GB Usable)

Hey Guys,

I've recently noticed my PC is not using all of the 3GB that is currently installed. And instead seem's to be only using 2GB. Interestingly on My Computer it says "Installed Memory 3.00GB (2.00 GB Usable)" Whereas when I first installed it it used all 3GB.

I've tried moving the RAM into different DIMM slots but no matter which combination I use I get the same message. I've tested all the sticks individually by themselves and they all work perfectly fine. I even upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 from 32 to see if that would help but it did'nt.

The RAM in question is XMS2 Corsair PC-6400, 3 1GB sticks. Two were bought with the PC and one later was added, but they are all the same bar the version of the RAM which is 2.1, and 8.2 if memory serves as obviously the newer stick is updated.

I also think the 2 sticks are C4 and the latest stick is C5 but that should'nt be a problem as it would underclock itself. The motherboard I'm using is a Fatality AN9 32X and it has been working fine up until the last week, any suggestions? :)

Use msconfig and check boot->"advanced options" and see if the maximum memory option is ticked - if so try unticking it and restarting.

Also from task manager (in Window 7/vista) on the Performance tab click the resource monitor option and select the memory tab - that will show how the memory is distributed and potentially narrow down where the issue is.

Hi Rroff,

Max Mem was unticked. On the memory tab the breakdown is currently as follows ...

1025 - Hardware Reserved
1378 - In Use
15 - Modified
600 - Standby
56 - Free

Which the total does indeed add up to the full amount of RAM. Why is my Hardware reserving such a vast amount of RAM, could this be the issue?

Check memory remap in BIOS Captain! :)

Its enabled Captain, is this correct? :)

Hardware reserved should be more like 2-8MB. Theres a couple of different ways to solve this that have cropped up on this forum before but I can't remember the exact details - will dig a little.

Check the RAM is running at the right voltage and timings? Motherboard auto settings could be wrong, especially if you have 2 different types.

Hi Fanatic, unfortunately I have no idea what the default voltages are. But they've been running fine for a few weeks now with the default settings? Also all the RAM is the exact same brand and model, one is just a slightly newer version so surely they should all be fairly similar? :)

A sticker on the side of the RAM modules should tell you the voltage.

I'd look in the BIOS and check the timings in DRAM Configuration

The same place you checked where the memory remapping (Memory Hole Remapping) was on or not ;)

Found a .pfd of the manual, timings for RAM are in Advanced Chipset Features -> DRAM Configuration

I have the original manual, what page is it on? Or do you have a different manual to me ;)

Google says for XMS2 Corsair PC-6400 it is 4-4-4-12. You might want to try 5-5-5-15 to start with though.

Looking at the manual there are more options than just 4-4-4-12. I would guess Twr, Trcd, Trp, and Tras are the ones you want.

Hey Fanatic,

Does that mean I go through it in that order? I've never changed RAM timings but I assume you mean the section that has options such as scrub rate and so forth?

Before you go changing clocks are you really sure that Memory Hole Remapping is enabled? :)

And you are pressing F10 to save the changes in the BIOS?

Changing the clocks on that board looks more complicated than on my Asus; so many options.

Maybe someone else here with the board could help out

Hi Fanatic,

It's enabled by default so I did'nt have to turn it on and save it. But I'll turn it off, save it, and turn it back on and then save it just incase ;)

I've looked in the DRAM settings before on the BIOS, but beyond that I have no idea what or were I'm changing anything as the manual is'nt much help in that respect!

Highlighted the bits you are interested in, use + and - keys to change the values. Unless they are already set correctly.

Thats brilliant mate, will try that now! I was wondering will I need to adjust the voltages for the RAM aswell if I start making changes to the timings?
