Gainward BLISS GeForce 7800 GS+ 512MB GDDR3 (AGP)

Having read a few threads about this card, there's lot of people who seem to be 'um'ing and r'ing' about getting Geforce 7800GS or GS+ to boost AGP set up to see them through to mid next year or later. Yes the X1950 is slightly faster + much better value so i'd never suggest anyone gets the 7800GS+ over an X1950 going by current prices. However just to give people an idea of the 7800GS+ 24pipe versions grunt; decided to update this thread with the stats from my old AGP PC thats since been replaced. :)

Test system:

-Athlon 939 4000+
-MSI K8N Neo Plat
-2GB G.Skill PC3200 ZX
-Gainward 7800GS+ (24 pipe version)
-Western Digital 80gb SATA 150 HD
-Seasonic 500W PSU

7800GS+ at stock results:

-3Dmark05 Standard settings 1024x768 32bit score: 8625
-3DMark06 Standard settings 1280x1024 32bit score: 4602
-Company of Heroes 1600x1200 max detail: Ave 36.7fps, Max 85.5fps
-Counterstrike Source 1600x1200 max detail: 112.43fps
-Fear 1600x1200 max detail: Average 48fps

7800GS+ overclocked (Core 550MHz/Mem 1400MHz):

-Company of Heroes 1600x1200 max detail: Ave 44.7fps, Max 106.2fps
-Counterstrike Source 1600x1200 max detail: 133.46fps

Edit:

Below 3DMark03/05/06 results (thumbnail clicky pic) using same PC with dual core 4800+ CPU (o/c to 2.95)

I have this exact card but after re-installing everything onto the new HDD, have not had much of a chance to bench it as this was the 2nd card I got after the 1st being faulty from the get go, and thought this one was until OcUK said there testing went fine, so after my new HDD, im hoping that was the slight pixellations I was facing.

Just for the record, what driver version did you use to get all these scores? You mentioned everything but the version

Yeah sorry forgot to say the drivers used which are 84.21 forceware winxp2k. Mainly coz latest Nvidia drivers seem a little dodgy both on my system and brothers so we opted to stick with older set for now. ;)

I dont have that game yet no, but done more tests with rez levels im sure the majority use instead of the above average one's i tested certain games with and added to main post^ ;) I took gamble buying the card after my bro gave me some cash for the 6800ultra and pleased to say it was worth while, deffo will see me through till late next year when its time to do a compleate system overhaul.

Rayb74 - I have this card and Oblivion. My system is AMD 64 3700+, MSI K8N Neo2 Plat, 2 Gigs twinned Corsair XMS RAM, Gainward 7800GS+ 512mb (stock settings not OC), Audigy 2ZS sound.

I am getting 20-30fps outside and 40-50 in buildings/caves etc. All in-game graphics settings are maxed. 2XQ AA and 4XAF. I have the Landscape LOD and Grass texture mods installed. Also I tweaked the RAM loading settings according to the tweakguides info. and this has made in-game loading of scenery very smooth. Overall it is extremely playable and I have no complaints!

I managed to get mine working after buying a better PSU (Tagan 480W > Tagan 580W)

There doesnt seem to be as many people around here with this card as I might have thought, unless they are hiding somewhere? :p

Anyway, im wondering what the best driver version is for this card specifically?

How far have people managed to O/C theres by? I used my CoolBits 2.0, and when I ased it to "detect optimal settings" it gave me the maximum that the sliders could go, checked back to Expertool, and the sliders in that program were both at maximum red, so not wanting to risk anything, I moved back to the yellow part.

Probably the reason why there are not many people with this card is due to the ridiculous cost of it (for an AGP card anyway) and that you cannot carry it over to the next upgrade. It never was a cost effective upgrade with this card. If you were able to it made more sense to upgrade to a pci-e motherboard and pci-e graphics card. In most cases it was cheaper to do this. On top of that, when you upgrade again you could carry the graphics card over as well. If, on the other hand, you had a socket A rig or an Intel rig that you could'nt upgrade to pci-e then the only option was to buy this card and make your rig last another year or so or build a whole new rig. The last option would obviously cost more and while not everyone could afford to do this it would have been the better choice.

Thats some fairly decent results tbh! IF you have the cash and dont fancy a new build until sometime next year then why not get it?
It's the best you'll get for AGP so if your sticking with what you have and want the best then this is it!

Thats what I decided to do in the end, as my water cooler went, and caused my CPU & Mobo to stop working, which cost a lot of money to replace and a lot more for someone to make it all work again for me, and after that it drained all my spare money for a new rig anytime soon, so my only avenue of playing any decent games currently was a new card, and that was the most powerful one that is available for AGP.

Hopefully by next year I will be able to sell the machine. If nobody is interested, I will just keep it as a spare machine as and when needed

Hi man,

Did you try it with HDR enabled and if so any probs? Also, and this is odd, when you engage characters in conversation - character is in close-up - any weird flickering? This is the only game that I have problems with so I am assuming it is not the card. The HDR black screen problem seems to randomly strike any nvidia card - not just 7900's (7800gs+'s).

Added couple more test results for anyone who cares to peruse over since ive found the limits of the cards overclocking potential and yet still be stable. Check main thread post at bottom. :)

hehe I didn't notice that either...

still interesting as I've been considering putting a Gainward BLISS 7800GS+ in my 2nd machine, but it currently has a very well performing Gainward BLISS 6800 Golden Sample w/ 512Mb DDR3 so I'm not sure its worth it.
