Hi guys,

Very new to Mac OS so bare with me. Have just bought my dad a Mac Mini so i don't have to clean his PC for malware etc every five minutes and am having some problems installing his Lexmark P6250. I have connected it via the USB cable, downloaded and installed the driver from the Lexmark website and followed the instructions, but after downloading i get the message "The printer is supported only in Mac OS 10.1.5 or later. It is not supported in classic".

I have tried two different drivers, one from Lexmark themselves and another from a driver download site (different file size, thought it was worth a try!)with no luck.

Can anyone help?!

Well, according to Lexmark even though their website says the driver supports Mac OS 10.4.x it doesn't work with 10.4.10. Brilliant! Unless anyone knows of a similar driver (HP Laserjet 4? :p ) that works with the 6250 or unless i can somehow wrap a Windows driver into Mac OS im screwed!

Why not manually add the driver?

To access the template drivers go to the print/fax preference in system preferences and click the little + icon in the lower left.

Then just look under "ESP" for the nearest match to the printer model and it should give you basic print functionality.

It will look something like this:

I don't know how to take a screenshot on OSX, haha :)

I tried what you said, gave the two Epson Stylus Colour ones a try (normal and "New" one) and also tried the two HP Deskjet ones (again, the normal and the "New" one. All that happens is, i try and print something and it says "Starting job..." then says "Printer not responding" or something like that and it stops.

Have set the Mini up with bootcamp so he can print from Windows, bit annoying though would like to get him using OSX mainly! Any more ideas matey?

Oh and by the way, when i go to add it says printer name "6200 Series" and connection is USB which seems correct to me...

Apple + Shift + 3 = complete screencapture
Apple + Shift + 4 = custom-sizable screencapture

Apple + Shift + 4, then press spacebar = single window capture

Stupid question, but is the printer switched on?

FYI: It says Bonjour on my screenshot because it's a networked printer

I have this all in one printer and it works perfectly on my macbook.
It came with a seperate osx driver cd. Just install from there and it works.

Your using 10.4.10 aswell? Did try it off the CD aswell with no luck, and the guy from Lexmark said their drivers work up until 10.4.9 but not with 10.4.10 yet (although im not sure if he was just trying to fob me off). Will give the above a try but so far no luck...

Thanks for that, and yep it is definately switched on :p . Works on the Mini with XP so obviously not an issue with the printer.

Did you have a driver CD bundled with it?

It may just be that the printer needs a new driver for 10.4.10, but if you have a CD try the driver on that.

Can you change the Product Version in SystemVersion.plist from /System/Library/CoreServices to 10.4.9 temporarily while you install the drivers?

I'm new to OSX myself so take no responsibilty if this kills your machine (:p) but I'm sure I saw this as a workaround for another piece of software I installed at some point.

Thanks for the help guys, unfortunately my dad threw out the CD with the box (no surprise there really), so the only option i have is the one from Lexmark's website, which doesn't seem to work. I don't think it will work if i change the OSX version number either as it seems to install all the Lexmark components and driver OK - but as soon as it tries to print a test page you get the error message...

I'm going to try downloading the stuff mentioned a couple of posts above as i'm now back on the right machine, but if it doesn't work i think i'll officially just give up and tell him to print from Windows :p

Nope, no luck there. Was going to post some screenshot's but after leaning how to take them i have no idea how to save them! Tried pasting into iPhoto and the NeoOffice "Drawing" program but can't seem to save it as a jpeg or anything...any help?

it automatically saves the screenshot on to the deskop in png format, you just have to upload it using a site like Imageshack :)
