GTX 460s - Who is getting some for folding?

Looking at the price and GFLOPs rating of the new GTX460 they look like they could be great value folding units. I know GFLOP isn't the b all and end all of PPD rates, but it at least looks promising.

Anyone planning on getting some? Would be interesting to see how the PPD stacks up against the 465 and 470.

Due to the redesign the 460 is actually more efficient clock for clock than the 465/470/480, so in theory they should be grand number crunchers.

It might be a bit of a nightmare as it seems a lot of companies are using different board designs. If there is a standard Nvidia board then there will probably be blocks for it.

But definitely this looks to be the next GTX260 for folding on. You'll have to overclock the nuts off it to catch a GTX470 and then power use starts to match the card you are trying to catch, but even highly overclocked its some 70W or so less

So yeah probably a great card as they removed stuff from the card not really used for folding/boinc.

Yeah, very true. Although I'm sure some of the 800MHz factory OC versions will give the 470 a run for its money. Tempted to get a pair of EVGA standards and flash them to Superclocked vBios.

Hopefully HeX can give us some info if his card turns up today.

I have a 470 oc'd to 748mhz - surely given the lower CUDA core count; even oc'd the 460 won't give the same ppd as my existing 470?

But it does have higher stock clocks (perhaps because of the optimised architecture/lower power draw=less heat etc) so will probably o/c higher than the 470s

460's are clocking to 800Mhz.. thats what I am saying, a highly overclocked 460 might reach a stock clocked 470's PPD but by the time it does it will be eating the same power as a 470.

But then you can clock a 470 to 480 with a bit of a voltage bump.... But...

By the time you clock a 470 to 480 stock PPD its eating the same power as a 480 at stock, and then you can overclock the 480 out of the park

ad infinitum... till you run out of PCie slots or burn out your PSU and mobo

That is true, but price is the other factor. 800MHz factory clocked 460s are £200 where as stock 470s are £260+. Even if the 460s are slightly slower, they may still workout as the best ppd/£ cards.

Guess we need hard data, hopefully there will be some in the coming weeks.

hard to tell with all the goings on at borkley but I reckon 13 or 14k per day on seti
I think the stock 460 price is good but even allowing for overclocking I would rather have the extra cuda cores...

I dont know to be honest, Ive never folded, but not all projects give the same credit, take Milkyway@home - they give far more credit..

Very interesting - thats made my mind up, cant beat the value for money of a 460, but the extra cores do make a difference...
