Depending on how things turn out this year (jobs and whatever else!), I would like to take a holiday (the first 'proper' holiday since secondary school days and the obligatory trips to France/Germany) at some point during this year (for somewhere between 7 and 14 days I guess)!

The top of my 'where to visit' list is Las Vegas, at the moment anyway!

In this thread, I'm not looking for a what to do/where to go type thing as it could still be a fair time away for me! However, it would be interesting to hear from anyone with any thoughts and personal experiences from over that way :)

I realise this thread is quite random, and I apologise for that, but I'm just starting to get curious as my plans feel like they are getting closer to some kind of reality :)

You want reality and are considering Vegas  :D

Vegas is about as surreal as any place on Earth is likely to get.

It can be fun, and some facilities are good, but I wouldn't want to spend long there. After a few days, I've had enough and can't wait to get out - though that is after a couple of dozen (business) trips.

As for trips, Vegas is a decent base for Grand Canyon excursions, and the Hoover dam is that far either. It's also only a brief flight to California, or the Texas Gulf coast.

Check out weather for the time of year you're intending to visit. The desert can be VERY hot or damn cold. It varies a LOT.

Las Vegas is worth experiencing, is it quite a surreal place. I only stayed a few days and was too young to gamble at the time, but was still entertained.

My brother is on his way there right now to compete in the big gaming tournament being held there.

I can't recommend the Grand Canyone enough though. It was amazing. Took a helicopter ride, some walking around and it was great seeing rain in the desert as well, especially the mini twisters you could see.

OoooOOOooo ermm... I've been!! I really enjoyed it, went in 98. I dunno where to start about it though, so if you have any questions let me know and I'll do my best :D

Depending on how long you're there...

1) Some of the hotels are pretty spectacular in their own right. Go have a wander round a few. Some also offer free shows/attractions at various times. Many of the hotels have on-site (paid for) attractions as well. You usually have to go through the casinos to get to the shows/attractions (they want you to gamble, remember - that's where they get most of their money).

2) Nightly shows. Tickets aren't cheap (often in the $50 to $100 price range), but there is plenty of choice.

3) Downtown Vegas. Try to go in the evening (preferably after dark) and watch the Fremont Street Experience.

4) Gambling. How could you go to Vegas and not gamble? Only tip I'd give is to set a limit on how much you're willing to gamble and stick to it.

5) Out-of-town stuff. Flights available to Grand Canyon and Yosemite. Both worth a visit (although the best time for Yosemite is spring). Didn't get chance to go to the Hoover Dam, so can't comment on that.

Mum and Dad went and said it was amazing. Said the best bit was alking down the strip and talking to the bikers and looking at the cars and stuff that lined the streets.

Would love to go myself

Went in 2000 :)

Picked car up in Los Angeles and went to JPL (NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory) had a tour.

After a couple of days in LA drove to Las Vegas. Brilliant place. For gamblers or non gamblers alike.

Couple of days there, then on to Hoover Dam. Very interesting.

Drove to Grand Canyon. You *have* to see it with your own eyes to appreciate the beauty of the place.

Then on to Meteor Crater in Arizona. Breathtaking.

Back to Las Vegas, few more nights :)

Back to Los Angeles and flew home.

I'm hoping to spend this Xmas and New Year in Las Vegas. :)

Great place

Hotels to stay in

Mirage
Paris
TI
Venetian
Bellagio
Caesers

Hotels to Avoid

Circus Circus ( at all costs )
Excalibur
MGM
Luxor
Imperial Palace

Go to Grand Canyon but make sure its the south rim , west rim is not the real canyon , if the trip involves a helicopter landing on the floor of the canyon then thats the west rim

See one of the big shows , "mystere" is awesome

I went last year and in 99 and loved it both times

I stayed at the Luxor, courtesy of the generous British Tax Payer and had a great time. :D 'They' even paid for me to spend time in Santa Monica too :D:D God bless you all.

Circus Circus was a right dump though.

I also stayed at the Luxor and must say it was probably the most interesting hotel Ive ever stayed in. It was quality, most people I know who have been to Vegas when to see the attractions inside even though they werent staying at it.

Luxor in itself is OK , its just that the location is poor and other hotels affer everything they have in a better location at the same price or less

Yeah, agree on the poor location. I hated crossing over the bridge at the MGM intersection then being accosted by all the people handling adult leaflets etc out.

I was in Vegas for 4 days, and that was enough for me. Granted during the day I was at Comdex, but I wouldnt want to stay there for a holiday, not when Santa Monica is 'up the road', Mmmm beech babes.:D

aladdin is a good hotel to stay in, they have one of the best buffets to, and their standard room is huge and it is a very reasonable price, thats where i stayed.

I thought MGM was an ok hotel, they do have the lion exhibit there, which is pretty good. Luxor also has the iMax. But you must avoid Circus Circus, Imperial Palace, Excalibur aint great but the medieval show they have is excellent.

Wasn't expecting this thread to be on page one still today! So, thanks for the input! An interesting read for sure - I think you have a good point, Harley, about the reality <> Vegas combination :p

As most of you say, going for the 'experience' is the main attraction - seen programmes about it and it would be so different to start off my 'holidaying career' (or something ;)), rather than just nipping over to France/Spain etc! Handy list of hotels there Rotty, my sister went over to the Paris hotel a couple of years back on a business trip - I'll also have to have a chat with her about it next time we speak

Would also definitely be interested in the extensions, rather than just staying in the main area - Grand Canyon via helicopter does indeed sound fantastic...

Fusion, I don't have anything specific at the moment in all honesty (like I said in the opening post, this is quite a random thread :D)... I was just looking to get a feel of what others thought about LV :)

Cheers again for all of the above, and if anyone has anything else to add - feel free!!

ever thought of .........

I heard that Las Vegas was a major let down (unless your a gambler of course) - Ever thought of Slovenia or the Aolian islands ??? Two most beautiful places in the world !

If you do go to Vegas though try & arrive by car across the desert, meant to be an amazing experience.

Enjoy it whatever !;)

Absolutely not , anyone who had been will tell you otherwise :)

i stayed in the Circus Circus ... and yeah its not great, cheap as chips though :) also drove from LA across the desert to Vegas which was an interesting experience ... would recommend it.

Id agree with Interga, Santa Monica is a great place to check out, fantastic place to chill out in the sun.

Spent 3 nights in Vegas itself of which a day was spent at the grand canyon / hoover dam, wouldnt really of wanted to stay there any longer to be honest ... although strangely id love to go back  :)
