After the cull i thought it necessary to keep an Anime thread going, after all, Anime's a way of life.(an expensive one at that :D ) I didn't post this in the DVD section as previous discussions have gone on to cover all things related to Anime. If a mod (or Werewolf) wants to move it to a different section, please do.


Yesterday I watched Princess Mononoke and I must admit I was stunt by the beauty of this piece. it's like disney cartoon from japan. beautifully done. I recommend it to all of you.

Mononoke is a brilliant film, still remember watching this first time round when my Japanese VHS copy arrived. No dubs or subs just plain Japanese, i couldn't understand what was being said, but i still loved it.

This also comes in handy as 3 more Miyazaki films are released on Feb 22nd. Nausicaa of the valley of the wind, Porco Rosso and The cat returns. All we need now is a decent version or Totoro* ( I've pre-ordered all 3 from DVDPacific so hopefully no tax charges)

* If anyone's got the Feb issue of NewtypeUSA(Vol 04, No.02) turn to page 20. I want that Catbus:cool: (yes i'm a child)
 
I've been meaning to post in the Anime thread for a while but never quite got round to it so here's my question anyway.....

Any ideas for 'beginners' anime? It looks like something I'd be interested in but don't want anything too complex to start me off if that makes sense and doesn't make me sound like I have the IQ of an insect :o It's just it always looks a bit erm.....specialist ;)
 
New Dominion Tank Police, Haly :)

It's just about.. police people with tanks. Fairly mindless at times, some funny, some serious, but no uber-complicated plot and so on. Good, clean, violent fun. Mostly semi-slapstick, but very very good.
 
The only anime I watch is naruto but I have touched on cowboy bebop and full metal alchemist a bit.


Also where do you all buy your animes from online?

Haly, let us know what sort of things interest you (films, books etc) and we should be able to find you something :)
There is everything from stuff that would fit in well next to Disney's animation, right up to stuff that makes most live action porn look tame :eek: and everything in between.

I would probably recommend something like "Spirited Away" as a fairly good starter film, (it's on Sky movies every now and then i beleive),.

"Fruits Basket" is a fairly good relationship drama at it's heart, and very popular.

"Cowboy Bebop" and "Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on heavens door" (Cowboy Bebop the movie) is a very good, generally light hearted sci-fi/action series.

"Macross Plus" is a very nicely done sci-fi/action type OVA (3 discs available for £9 all in at some retailers), sort of like Top Gun but with transformable fighters and a great musical score.


As for where I buy my anime from, a large online UK/R2 retailer I can't name, and DVDpacific.com for R1's

2 words. Last Exile. Just been released in this country. Its a 26 episode tv series (don't let that put you off) but for me has to be one of my high lights of 2004. Even managed to get a couple of workmates interested. To the points where they kept bugging me for the "next disc" when i didn't have it yet.
Have a look through the previous Anime thread in the archive, for a full run down.

Before i forget, Total DVD has the first episode on their cover mount DVD (or so i've been led to believe)
 
Film wise I'm afraid i like most things which is no help at all for you :o
But one thing that's what makes me lean towards Anime is the kind of games I like, love all the Japanese RPGs (well the relatively few that have come over here), the Final Fantasy series etc and the stories they all have. Did used to read some Manga comics of mainly Street Fighter as well as anything I could get my hands on (think this was about 10 years ago so memory is a bit vague as to what).

Basically this is what's made me consider trying something Anime related.

Keep meaning to rent Ghost In the Shell or Akira some time as from what I've gathered this is the most mainstream sort of thing but I'd also like to try something else a bit more unknown :)

Heard of Cowboy Bebop although not the others you've all mentioned, but i'll have a look through the archived thread now :)
 
Last Exile is very good (the dub is great which is a bonus for people who like Dubs), but possibly not the best for someone who presumably will be buying/renting the entire series as it's probably going to be 7 discs like the R1 and R4.

"Princess Mononoke", is a very nice anime film (same director and studio as Spirited Away), and might be worth watching as a newcomer to Anime.

"Grave of the Fireflies" is a very good, moving anime about the effects of war on childrem, but it is hard going at times, and one of a very few discs i've got in my collection that has only been watched once.
I know i'll watch it again, but it's pretty depressing, you know from the very first scene that the main characters will die (which just makes everything else sadder).
 
I am but an anime newb, and I enjoyed:

Cowboy Bebop - Good action scifi coolness
Azumanga Daioh - Light hearted cute fun
Grave of the Fireflies - Moving WW2 drama
Spirited Away - Sort of fantasy/adventure type thing, amazing visuals, pretty accessible
Ghost in the Shell: I've only seen the movie, but enjoyed it. It was a little hard to follow, but I don't really think I gave it 100% concentration and will probably rewatch it soon :)
 
I'm in a weird limbo situation with anime - I like it, have done for a few years now, probably about five, but I've never gone very far into it. I'd love to but find it very daunting, so I shall keep my eye on this thread.
All the stuff I've seen really is tank police, venus wars, akira, ghost in the shell, patlabor 1 & 2 and spirited away... I'd love to watch all of Evangelion but the price is prohibitive. I've got Death & Rebirth, but refuse to watch it until I've seen the rest.

actually if you do want some collector version of studio ghilbi stuff www.jlist.com sells them at $50 each and they have a pretty full collection (3 DVD per movie edition, with subs and 8 different language include all the extra stuff too.)
and that cat bus lol, they sell it at jlist too. they got this huge (like half of human) size Totoro plush too. amazing

my Newtype USA subscription ran out this january not sure if i can be bother with it anymore. they do show you some good review n stuff but they also introduce loads rubbish too.

Next to buy - Spirited Away 3DVD collection... another $50 gone >.<
 
My 2 favourite animes at the moment, Naruto and Shadow Skill TV are not licensed yet, and my other favourite anime, Elfen Lied, has just been licensed by ADV and is pending release (that'll be about 5 years then) so I can't really recommend those for starter animes. :(

Check out the trailer for Elfen Lied on ADV's website though, it is a purely stunning anime, but will be an 18+ only title due to it covering some very touchy subjects.
 
I don't understand anime, is there something I'm missing? I watched Ghost in the Shell and kept wondering why I was watching it and that it seemed aimed at children... what's the score? :confused:

Ghost In The Shell has nudity and violence, I'm not sure how you could think it was aimed at children!? :eek: :confused:

Anime is like cartoons for people of all ages. Some are aimed at children (Pokemon, Sailor Moon etc) while some are aimed at a more mature audience (Akira, Ghost In The Shell.) It's just a universal form of entertainment. :)

Ghost in the shell aimed at kids? I don't know why you think that, a lot of adults find it complex! Maybe Urotsukidôji would be more you're speed ;)

Oh and a good anime for beginers apart from Cowboy Bebop is Trigun. It's really funny in a strange kinda way although it gets a bit too serious in the end if you ask me. Hellsing is good also.

I enjoyed it at first, but I got up to about episode 8 and just got a bit bored of it - it didn't really feel like a continuation, it just seemed very "random". Still quite good, but disappointed since I expected something of Bebop's calibre when it was recommended to me :(

The story and the actual concept is pretty cool for Elfen Lied. However one thing you should realise though is that the actual animated series's art style is more belong to the gene of "love hina" (cant think of better example, I will add more) it's not really suitable for such bloody, violent type. If the art work design was done by Production IG (ghost in the shell) it would be another mood in the anime.

While watching it I couldnt stop thinking of the series as a "happy happy comedy" rather than a bloody violent stuff. The mood isnt there.

PS. I just realised...the DVD I bought for Princess Mononoke costed me $68 inc shipping via EMS...damn customs would probably charge me :eek:

I think I get what you mean, the style of animation looks as if it could belong a romantic comedy type of anime like Love Hina (which is fantastic by the way.) The thing is, when you do see the eccessive violence, I guess it just adds to the whole "shock" factor of the anime.

I love the way you're just thrown straight into the bloodshed, and a character is introduced, and you think she's going to be one of the main characters, but is de-capitated a few minutes later. :D
