Hi there guys, i can currently get hold of either a opteron 170 for £349.95, or buy a 4400+ for £336, i am a overclocker so the lower stock speed on the 170 isn't a problem, but i know the opteron 170 multi only goes to 10, what does the 4400+ multi go to? and what are your thoughts on either cpu? which would be the better buy?

just get the 4400 lol its a £13.95 saving!!!!

both have 1MB x2 L2 cache, the 4400 toledo is a great overclocker so you might as well just save the cash, its an 11 multi chip but as you manage to run 280fsb it little advantage over the 170 really.

Erm just to let you know that the Opteron 170 is only £317 inc VAT on the OCuK site and its showing as in stock.

the opteron 170 is cheaper than the 4400

im in this pickle too.. wondering which one to go for

2.6ghz without to much fuss

mine does 2.6ghz on 1.475 v

I think it will do 2.8ghz (still tweaking)

my opteron 170 runs games @3 gigs but wont prime

unless its prime stable its not a sucessful clock IMO.

my 4400+ does 2.75 stable but for the pure quility of the core id go for the 170 to surly that will do 2.7, 2.8 think my 4400+ would do more but dont want to go over 1.6v

Well it was at that price long enough for me to get one

Well the difference is £18 now, is that enough to sway you ?

I promised myself if ocuk get the 170's in for less than 300 bux I would grab one.
I'd like to buy from ocuk and I was almost tempted by the 170 at £317, but its just not competitive enough a price for a 170 opty, now its way to much

the best silicon amd has goes into its server chips. your more likelyto get a better overclock using an oppy.

i can buy

Opteron hands down.. two san diego cores that can be overclocked to 2.8Ghz. So it would basically be a dual core FX-57.. the 4400+ (although very good) has a Toledo core i think.

EDIT: At stock the opteron is @ 2.0Ghz.

why sell a great cpu? the new 4400+'s have the 110w toledo cores that overclocks like mad! some manage more than some 165, 170 opterons.
even so your only lookin at an extra 200mhz at best, is it even worth selling your 4400+ and purchasing a more expensive chip in the hope it will clock better??

there toledo cores m8, the exact same core the 4400+'s have.

I wouldnt sell a 4400 to get an opty, but if i had a single core and I was upgrading to dual core then the opty all the way.

seems a bit obsessive imo getting rid of a perfectly good x2 4400 for an opty 170
