I'd heard great things about this game, but after playing it seems nearly every level is the same thing and the story line is awfull, it has to have the worst ending ever, I couldnt really tell what the storyline was anyway, something about some girl whos baby had been snatched or something, there was practically no cut scenes at all, I mean it doesnt have to be like mgs2 but it doesnt have to be the opposite either, at least enough so people can make sense of whats going on, no bosses in the game either :( .

After much repetition I was rewarded with the game rushing to an ending in the last 20mins of gamplay and then a cutscene about 30 secs long if that of some girl grabbing onto the helicopter. I never thought I could ever say this, but I actually prefered doom 3. I could tell what the story actually was about and the game was of a resonable length. The slo-mo thing might be cool but the game certainly wasnt.

I agree....relentlesly boring corridor shooter with a few nice pixel shader effects that have been badly coded to such an extent, SLI rigs stutter....

Played once, unistalled, of no further interest.

Storyline is a bit dodgy, in particular the lack of characterisation for secondary characters (watching the directors commentary etc does indicate that they had bigger plans for them). The combat and graphics (the bread and butter of a FPS) are good though.

Bear in mind that this game is rated 18 so you shouldn't have been playing it anyway :)

the words F.E.A.R and dissapointed DO NOT belong in the same sentence.
I love F.E.A.R and though the storyline is a bit umm, the game engine is waayy overspecced, as a game it is brill, running round a corner and blasting 3 guys in half cannot be underestimated......in slowmo..... :D
i understand your doubts and empathise, but there's just something in it that keeps dragging me back. ANY game with a gamerankings score of 88.9 (89%) cannot be bad.It made me jump out of my skin at least 5 times, one of which gave me nightmares.....isyn...
oh yeah and the ai is pretty cool to
"Flank right!"
"**** off"
made me laugh for ages

Its got nothing to do with a baby being snatched.

Its about the Armatech breeding two super soldiers.
Harlen Wade (CEO Armatech) puts his own daughter forward to be experimented on, she gives birth to two sons, the guy you controll and fettle.
She develops some kind of psykic powers and unleased good knows what kind of madness, corperation develops some way of locking her up, she dies.
Paxton Fettel is driven mad by his dead mother interfering with him from beyond the grave, him and his clone soldiers go to wreak revenge on the corperation.

Meanwhile, you out of nowhere are suddenly thrown into F.E.A.R through some behind the signs string pulling from the Us government as the only thing they know that is capable of killing fettle and dealing with the GUT WRENCHING HORRORRRRRRRRRRRRRRR being dealt out by your dead mum and nut job brother!!!!
etc etc.

i agree with you being dissapointed, i thought the game was awful, apart from how it looked, that i cannot knock - the graphics were fantastic, but the rest of it was tripe imho

The combat was good ill admit but in general the gameplay was nothing special, it was supposed to be scary but failed, the directors video was saying "fear messes with the players mind" if someone whispering to you every so often is supposed to be scary then I must be missing something, doom 3 was much more scarier even if it was just screaming monsters jumping out from behind you, how fear got an 18 rating i'll never know, the bbfc are far to strict these days.

I still can't bring myself to completing the game, it seems I get 20 minutes into it, and feel like i've been playing the same gun battle on repeat.

took me nearly two months to drag myself through it, the first couple of levels were SOooooOOoooo boring I nearly died, the last couple are a lot better but thats only relative.

That's the best and most accurate description of FEAR.

EVER!!!!

It got good reviews because it has:

-Good graphics
-Good combat/AI etc (relative to other FPS)
-Has a few "wow, that was cool!" moments which always sucker in reviewers - gives them some nice anecdotes to use in their piece. Do not underestimate the power such things can have in terms of influencing reviews.
-At the time of release, we hadn't seen many good FPS for quite a long time. In fact, it was arguably the first AAA FPS released since HL2, nearly a year previously, and the first major FPS of 2006, unless the count Serious Sam 2 a week before.

Got this from another website:-

F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault Recon): Plot Explained
I think it's a lack of depth and ability to think outside the box which have people not understanding the extremely well-written plot of F.E.A.R., so let me explain it simply, which includes some psychological aspects as well, but which is just an excellent plot, regardless, and only enhanced further if you understand the psychology behind what is happening in the game.

Alma, one of two main characters in the game, the other being Paxton Fettle, is your mother, and Paxton Fettle is your brother.

Essentially, the entire plot is this: Alma wants her sons back, and has suffered so much psychologically, that she feels the only way to have them back is through death, that they may be with her. She is a tortured soul, the word "alma" actually meaning soul in Spanish, as not only is her psychic ability something difficult to live with, but not only she was then imprisoned in a secret facility at the age of eight and experimented with due to her powers, but bore two sons who were both taken from her.

She is angry and in pain, and her soul (energy) so strong, that while she may be physically dead, having died at the age of 16 after the birth of her second son (Paxton Fettle), she is able to take physical form and effect the physical world.

You are the first-born son of Alma, being what you hear refered to as "the first time was a failure", which is refering to a secret military group attempting to create a psychic super-soldier.

I believe Paxton Fettle knows and understands this, thus his usage of the super-soldiers which are under his control, is really a method to release and be with his mother.

Hints are dropped by Paxton Fettle throughout the game, such as the haunting whispers of, "You don't know who you are...", and other such chilling lines throughout the game which hint at the fact that you have a deeper and more personal connection to both Alma and Paxton Fettle, which becomes quite obvious as to what that is towards the end of the game.

Alma was the Origin Project, and is the "disaster" you hear refered to in places throughout the game, as the two times she was let out of "the chamber", she killed.

THE BOTTOM LINE: (ALMA) She is a grieving mother suffering from misguided anger and pain, and wants her sons back, of which you are one and the first-born.

THE BOTTOM LINE: (PAXTON FETTLE) He feels his mother, and her "calling" to him, and his entire goal is to set her free and return to her. Along the way, attempting to guide you with him, and make you understand that you're one of the family.

Her appearence in the form of a child is a manifesation of the age at which she was imprisoned, and towards the end of the game, her appearence as an older girl a manifestation of her at the age of sixteen, when she physically died.

The chamber in which she was kept was thought to be able to contain her powers, both when she was alive and when she was dead, but they were quite wrong.

At the end of game, you see Alma climbing up into the helicopter just before the game ends... she is coming for her other son, which is you.

This is a straight-forward run-down of the plot, which hopefully now makes sense to those who could not understand it, and requires you to think and feel a bit deeper, as well as on a more psychological level as well to figure out competently.

i thought it was a cool game (completed it yesterday) ... made me jump and be on edge a fair few times

have always had a fear for dead girls with long hair that have the ability to warp right in front of u ... and this one was no different

the ending scared me .. the goodguys should always win in games like this :D

Couldn't agree more.

The main annoyance for me was the ridiculous system requirements for a game that doesn't look any better than say doom3/riddick.

Some of the models in the game are appauling. (barrels, and other items dotted around). Also I really enjoyed HL2 so the lack of any noticable real world physics really let this game down for me.

The main problem as a whole with the game is that after playing it for say half an hour and completing two or three levels you have played the whole game.

etc etc.

You're sent in as a test to see if the experiment was a success, not because you're the only one who can kill Fettle. Fettle isn't all that powerful, remember.
