PC GAMER OBLIVION REVIEW!!!!

I never trust pc gamer after their deusex 2 review. In fact I dont trust magazine reviews, im going to wait and see OcUKers reviews, im sure they know more about games than any games journalist. ;)

sorry for the delay in updating, i'm watching the F1 qualifying.

reviewer says he would have given it 96% but for some issues.

one illusion shattering problem is the terrible npc to npc interaction, what they say and who they say it to is pretty awful, sounds forced, sometimes makes no real sense and you'll hear many lines repeated again and again just in different voices. the facial animation is pretty bad (ranging from basic to non-existant), and some characters are just plain ugly (inc. patrick stewart).

i gotta say i can see where he is coming from with old picards character, i saw some vids and thought he looked a bit mangy, but attributed this to the vid being low quality, guess they actually needed to do some more work.

thats the cack stuff out the way, the list of good stuff in this game though is huge, and it's basically all the stuff we hoped. PC gamer say it's accomplished, bold, huge, beautiful, free form, vivid, brutal, immersive, the list goes on...

and overall

"a liberating masterpiece" - PC Gamer

(edit: im a subscriber, we get it early)

ok, i'm going to sound dumb here, but bear with me as i've never played this kind of game before.

What do you actually DO in this game? What's the point of it? Is it 1st person like an fps or 3rd person tomb raider esque? Please don't just say 'you do 'quests'...because i don't really know wth that means either! :D

Let us never mention that game again! :(

With DX2 there were warning signs that the game might not be as good as expected. Dosn't seem so for Oblivion every review so far has given it 90%+

well what you do in this kind of game is quests........ ;)

The whole point is kinda in the genre as it were. Its a Rpg, so you really take on the role of the character you create. You create your own story to a degree (although the main quest story line will be the same no matter who you are i think)

There will be so many sub quests and small storys though that there will be plenty to keep you going.

Some people dont like this sort of game due to the vastness of them.....they get the whole "whats the point" thing.......you really need to get absorded into it to fully enjoy

I guessed the NPC interaction might not live up to expectation. That's something I don't think any game has really ever got right. I have a PCG subscription but it's back home so I'll have to wait 2 weeks before I can read it :( . I'll have the game by then though :D

The reason why I have always disliked and never trusted PC GAMER despite their reviews being utter tripe compared to PCZONE, is that they have a habit of reviewing slightly unfinished code.

Awful magazine, i'll wait for the real professionals to review the game thanks....

Snow patrol, Tomb raider is probably the closer of the two, in that you run, jump, climb and swing a sword at monsters.

The whole premise of the game is that you're let out of prison at the start, and while you're given pointers as to where to go and what to do to follow the storyline, you can just bugger off and explore the massive world, find dungeons, explore them, rob npc's, find other storylines not associated with the main one.

When people say 'do quests' it might be a case of wandering into a town, talking to the local farmer who complains about monsters raiding his cattle. Investigate near his farm and you might find ruins with a dungeon beneath. Explore it, clear out the monsters, and let the farmer know for some kind of reward (I dunno, carrots maybe, but you get the idea).

It's basically a go-anywhere, do-anything game, with a central plot that you can dip into at will. One journalist for example who killed some innocent villagers subsequently got a visit from a member of the assassins guild, who offered him a whole load of tasks that less bloodthirsty players might never come across. It's gaming freedom bliss :)

check this movie review of the last elder scrolls game, it'll give a good idea about the style of gameplay:

some other movies, including Oblivion.

edit: the movie "Oblivion Bethesda Softworks 5 min 28 sec - Jan 30, 2006" is worthy of being looked at, shows some nice combat footage.

Sliiiightly (but not too far) off topic here, but I always find the best way to judge a game is to read various reviews. You get to know which sites and individual reviewers give you the best idea of whether to get a game. I always try to bear in mind as well that just because everybody gives a game the highest score ever doesn't necessarily mean I'll like it.

Dragon Quest on the PS2, for example, I won't be getting because I like my Japanese RPGs to have great stories and preferably lots of cyberpunky anime-inspired business.

Won't be getting Oblivion myself because I didn't get on with Morrowind, but I'm sure it'll be great if it's your thing.

I am the same, I have not quite worked out if I will enjoy the combat in it, I like dungeon seige 1 and am tempted to get 2 over oblivion!

Baldurs gate and Icewind dale were true RPG's. I am a bit worried that Oblivion may be all graphics and limited gameplay.

So shoot me :p
