I started working for a well known online travel agent (call centre) 2 weeks back. I have just finished my 2nd week training an hour ago (one more week of training left). We all got told by HR that we would be getting 5 days pay and it would go into our accounts today.....HR told us this 2 weeks ago. I checked my bank account this morning and it's not in. I then spoke to our trainer and he said that he will try and get us cheques at lunch time today. After I did my assessement, I asked the trainer what's happening about the cheques and his reply was "Oh, sorry. You all will not be getting any pay until the last working day in April" (company's next pay day). I was like  I have been in a bad mood all day today because of this and am even surprised I passed my assessement as i couldn't concentrate. A few ppl in the same group as me said they are leaving as they cannot afford to come in. They needed that pay.

Sorry for the moan. Just wanted to let this out lol. ARGH!!!

Two ways of looking at it really.

1, do you really want to work for a company that doesn't even manage to pay its staff on time, maybe it's a blessing and you should get out now.

2, every companies payroll makes the occasional balls up especially with new starters, why not be the person who distinguishes themselves compared to the others by not whining over it.

* I'm not saying that you aren't entitled to the money or you don't have the right to moan just that there could be an opportunity to be seen by the guys above you as a 'good guy'.

Yup, let them know how good you are by bending over for them. :D

Personally I'd be on my way to the HR department to have a discussion about it.

If it's a problem nip into the bank and get an overdraft/extention for a month till your paid.

Nice thou at the end of April as you'll have a nice pay chq and for the month you'll be not spending much.

And don't worry about not having anything to eat or paying for your travelling cost's & sod the big bad wolf when he comes calling for payment, because you'll be safe in the knowledge that your employers think you're a star for not whining about your pay.

Nah, they wouldn't even notice that you didn't whine anyway.

I said he had the right to the money and he could kick up a fuss over it if he chose, I just presented a possible solution if he could get by without it. It's pretty obvious that if you are going to starve then you make sure you get that money whatever the cost.
Why not present every possible advantage/disadvantage and let him make his own decision?

Nice replies guys :) I was going to go to HR and kick up a stink but then I thought that this would be a bad idea and would make a bad impression on me.

Was there a contract signed saying you would be paid after 2 weeks?

No, there wasn't. Still though.... the HR woman shouldn't of said that we WOULD get paid. It'd be a different story if she said we might get paid.

Usually there is some form of aggreement in your contract for the conditions of payment. Maybe have a look in there for thoses.

Also i'd go up to HR and ask for a cheque, and then even request it gets taken out of your pay owed to you, as you need the money.

Just try and work out some agreement for a smaller amount even to do you til pay day.

Reading between the lines I would say that you are in position of no financial responsibility, maybe living with parents? Or in a comfortable financial position, so as not really needing the money.

So I beg the question, what are we here for again???

most companies will make the effort to sub if there's such a large gap in employment to pay day, can ask them if they'd be willing to make certain amount available.

Because anybody who works for an employer has the right to expect his or her salary/wages to be paid on time. If everybody who was short-paid or late paid just allowed their employers to pay them whenever they pleased, we wouldn't know where we were.

I think it sets a bad precedent to let it slide as this gives the impression that it doesn't matter to you when you get paid.

Any employer who claims that short/late-pay cannot be paid until the next pay day is lying, they can always make arrangements to get your wages to you - it may be more awkward for them but it may help teach them not to mak the same mistake again.

Exactly, which is why I asked what are we here for?
I believed at the start of this thread he was very angry at not being paid, but it is clear now the OP has let it slide as he believes his new employers will think bad of him for making trouble. Now I believe as do most people, he should be demanding (In a polite way ;) ) the pay he is due.

At least you'll get a nice big wad of cash come april pay day

Well...No he won't - he's working in a call centre.

To be honest, I've NEVER worked for a company that paid you after a few days - it is always pay in lieu.

Eg: You start work halfway through March, the company's pay date is the 28th of each month.

I would expect my first pay at the end of April. Never before.

I would also expect my first pay to comprise of the time worked in April only...and that the two weeks in March would be paid upon leaving the company.

is there not any nice tft monitors and the usual (insert crap competitor who sounds like bell here) base units you can steal and flog on fleabay to fund yourself till next pay day :)
