Hello there. Just want to get in a few questions before I "network ready" my flat.
- Apart from a crimping tool and a punch down tool is there anything I might need?
- When you mounted the face placeplates and sent them to the patch panel, I presume you had the patch panel then go to the switch/router. Does it look "ugly" a bunch of wires coming out from the patch panel then to the switch/router?
- Do you have any pictures you could share please? Any useful links?

Many thanks :)

Edit - bah, just realised, this isn't Networks forum is it :p If a moderator could kindly move. Thanks :)

I know this doesn't help you but how do you run the cabling in the wall to the network points? I've always wondered that :p

I'd love to have my house networked as I'm sick of wireless to be honest and NTL won't move my cable point round to the back of the house.

Just run trunking round the edge of the room or run it under carpets:) In the offices I've done I tend to use trunking, but for my house I just run it under carpets.

If you plug the cables into the patch panel neatly, colour code them, cable tie them etc, it won't look ugly... There is an art to patching:)

Thanks for that :)
Can I e-mail you if I have any questions please?

When I crimp my wires I tend to leave a bit bare resulting in crosstalk :p

how are your hamsters?, oh and you might want a torch, going through the loft and down through the ceiling is the neatest way but under the carpet works too, wiring the network is super easy if your doing wall ports just a case of wire to coloured socket and then screw that in the wall, its all pretty straightford cant think of anything specific to say but I have wired up a house's network before so ask if you have any questions :p

my cable is all under the floor boards and just go inside wall and pop out and I have put in a face plate. Looks awesome.

You only need a punch down and a crimp and a screwdriver :p to screw the panels to the wall, thats all I used....

It doesn't look ugly, make custom length cables and it will look fine.

No pictures I'm afraid

I have bought 100 meters of CT100 (dogs danglies co-axial cable) and have access to the proper crimp tool.
I've put my own cable from the NTL box to the modem in - you could too.

Yup my house being built in Canada is currently being built with all the network cabling and network points in, also have a wireless network as well being built into the house. It will run off a gigabit switch so the whole house network will be gigabit enabled.

I had the plans drawn up and decided to let them do it for me, as of yet they havent started as the building will take place in june time as it will be warmer there, cant really build in freezing winter there:p.

Would have done it myself or got someone else to do it but the company who is building my house said they will do it as part of the package...couldnt really refuse tbh. End of the day it makes my life a lot more easier in the long run :).

No pics yet but after the summer i shall have some done :).

Just a krone tool, stanley knife and screwdriver needed really (plus the crimp tool if you're going to make your own patch leads).

Have wired both of my last two houses and it's better to cut the wires into the wall properly, then under the floorboards etc, makes a far neater job.

Have had a patch panel in the past, but tbh unless you're plugging/unplugging all the time it's far easier to just plug straight into a switch.

Only time consuming bit is cutting into the wall for backboxes + running the cables under the floor then making good. Rest doesn't take long.

No pics sadly.

You know you can get Homeplug (power over ethernet) devices in excess of 100Mbits now? Why not use these? they're a doddle to set up and you can take them if you move

I'm currently running them over the carpet and tiewrapped them together to my cabinet.

Heres a few pictures........

I'm planning on mounting the cables inside the walls later this year, will be planning it soon.. I've just gotmyself an ADSL wic for my 2610 so will be experimenting with that soon too.

Do you have NTL TV?

If you dont.. order it.... get installed where you want new modem point.. cancel within 28 days as per their money back gurantee.... voila - new modem point installed for free :)

Thanks a lot for the pictures Zen.

I figured my BT line needs doing as well so what I am going to do is get a face plate with no modules in them. Then buy an RJ45 module and BT Module (for the phone).

Trouble is, I can't find any BT modules. Do you know if these can be purchased or not? (I'm not looking for the RJ11 style connector. I'm looking for the UK Phone style connector)

Many thanks :)

As a follow on of my previous post i'm talking about these:

Also, is it possible to get a module with an "in built" ADSL filter?
Otherwise i'll just "build" the filters into the face plate by stripping the filter of its electronics and shoving it in the faceplate :D
