Hi all. Before the mods move this id like to say that as a general item i truly believe that this thread belongs in GH because this is something ANYONE can do and most of us these days us wireless networks at home.

I was skeptical about this, because i use a router + extenders to cover a large are (hotel grounds + many floors) however i thought it was worth a go because antennae + radio signals is not really rocket science yet companies charge massive amounts for high gain antennae.

I HAVE MADE ONE OUTTA CARD AND TIN FOIL THAT DOUBLES MY SPEED.

oh dear this is starting to sound like a dodgy ebay get-rich-quick ad lol. Dont worry, no paypal logos involved here......just click this...lol just messing.!!!

Basically this link will show u all you need to know. If you want to take it further there are systems with WOK type cooking parabolas that can be used for up to 3 times the gain of normal antennae although are a bit more complex. This design tho has improved my signal significantly through both use on the router and on my reciever dongle. Try it! Its not like its gonna cost you anything!!!

PS give mee £150 if you think its good ;)

Have you ever written spam emails as a proffession or been a door to door sales man?

Doubles your speed you recon... that'd be a really good trick, if you attach it to your car arial does it make the DJs talk twice as fast?

Maybe increase range.. but not speed, it just won't work like that.

lol err 1 sec. oh and whoever it was that said you cant increase link speed should probably examine b/sec for connections further from source. you most certainly CAN get a faster connection from a better reciever and if you maintain that you CANT i want evidence!

if my home network was wireless... i'd give it a go... but it's wired so i can't :p
any DIY kits for boosting wired networks would be great, can't imagine anything that would work... a SoapBox Router...? ;)

The stronger the signal the better the speed is in general. Of course your still limited the the access points maxium transfer rate, which is fairly low compared to wired.

wouldn't that sort of aerial make your router signal horribly directional?

Yes it would, which makes it ideal for someone like me who only has one pc on the wireless network :D

I've just printed out the templates, going to cut them out and assemble it now. Thanks for the link :)

I think I'll give this a try myself!

My wireless always seems to drop down from 54mbps due to poor signal so anything that's free and might help is worth a go :)

Its worth a shot. I made 2. 1 using cereal-box card + tinfoil and another with packing card (thicker)

Cereal box card one works great, other one not so good (foil not smooth enough)

Gonna go pick up some chinese cookware soon to make THIS wooooo :D

Both of mine are made from sticking two pieces of paper back to back :p Couldn't find any card. I'll be testing them out soon.

Should work ok, its the angles that matter, principle being that the radio signal is reflected inward by the assembly toward a focal point.
