I am looking to get harnesses fitted in the MR2 at some point instead of seatbelts but know nothing about the subject.

Does anyone know a rough cost for getting this done ?

All i know is Sabelt make good harnesses if not the best :)
Ive seen people weld a bar on the out side part of the fire wall, drill a hole and connect them up to the bar have having it bolted right though the fire wall and the bar the put there.

Im not sure how safe that would be though

Don't you really need a rollcage to have a proper harness as they connect directly to the rollcage. If you are just wanting more support when going round corners but don't want to go all the way to having a rollcage and harness then how about a CG Lock?

Speaking for my self here but i would rather have a harness over one of those things.
They would feel more safer and look better :D

But they also cost a fraction of the price of a rollcage + harness.

They do indeed.
Can always save up for a Rollcage+Harness :)

Well thats what i would do :)

I too would be interested in knowing why not?

I feel quite safe in my Cobra with full harness, and it does not have a full rollcage.
Although the correctly placed mounts are within the structure of the chassis.

If you don't have a cage and you roll, you are pinned in place by your harness and suddenly the weight of the car is on your head.

Likewise, if you have the harness straps going down to the floor behind the seats, the seat back may break (they are not designed for forces to go straight down through them which is what happens if the harness straps go down instead of straight back) which results in you having your spine compressed.

With out a proper Racing/sport seat you will move around a bit and if your roll cage is put in incorrectly or just not designed and set out very well you can hit your head on it i think

Edit: or theres penskis reason :o

Thats ok then, I fully understand the concept of load bearing on the seat, hence why mine go straight back through the bulkhead to the correctly placed mount point. The SVA inspector checked the seatbelt mounts very very carefully.
On the other point, If I rolled the Cobra, I would have been doing something SO fundamentally stupid, that death would most likely occur anyway!

We're talking about an MR2. With a roof and the ability to attach the harness to the firewall via reinforcing plates.

Therefore neither of your points apply.

...Right...So the roof an an MR2 will not deform if you roll it...?

It could be something as simple as a blow-out sending you into the central reservation. Certainly not a risk I would take.

Of course it'll deform but unless you put it on the roof with some serious force I certainly wouldn't expect it to collapse around me particularly at the back where you have both 'B' and 'C' pillars very close together to take all the load.

I think he means the roof will help keep the fire wall pretty straight and not bend or fold :)
Only a guess though

Edit: Damm people posting just before i get my post in
