america's equivalent to sky?

what is it, a simple question?

The Americans are lucky and they have a proper choice of many providers unlike the UK where we have 1 premium satellite provider :( This provider dominates the market and why the Monopolies and Mergers Commission have never got hold of them beats me.

Well it doesn't actaully the fact that Murdock controls a huge portion of the press and media means it would give any goverment that probed its monopoly the ride of its life is why Sky holds us in an iron grip!

The MMC (now Competition Commission) have never got hold of anyone - Even when they went after Murdoch and News International for their stranglehold on the UK media. They are, essentially, toothless.

In the USA, at least, they have anti-trust (read: anti-monopoly) legislation that can be called upon by private individuals as class action suits.

We still have the choice of cable though, although there's generally less choice of channels.

I think you'll find they very much do to all intents and purposes!

So how is it that you can receive Channel 4, UKTV channels, BBC etc by Satellite, when none of them are sky companies, and in many cases you dont evn need a Sky account to receive them?

But Sky has a monopoly on Sky movies, Sky sports and the other Sky channels.

It's unfair, I tell you.

(They have just made an agreement to bundle the Extreme Sports channel, which was, 'til now, free to air. And that does suck.)

Sky have a monopoly on Satellite, just like NTL now do on Cable. In some parts of the country, if you want digital, your only choice is Sky satellite. Neither cable nor freeview yet have the countrywide reach that satellite does. That, in my view, makes at least a partial monopoly.

In the states, as posted above, there are at least two major satellite providers - Dish and DirecTV.

In both cases, this concerns the means to receive the channels, rather than the channels themselves, which are in good proportion the same across all providers.
