i have £550 to spend roughly! and i dont know where to start. ive looked at the bundles on ocuk and came up with this.

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) (MY-058-GL)
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS4 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-062-GI)
Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail (CP-128-IN)

£558.09

i assume this is the best most compatible setup i can get with my money

this will be my first ever intel rig since my first pc.

thanks for help/comments

tbh fella there's not a lot wrong with that combo! personally unless the 4mb cache is vital crucial to your needs then i would keep the ram but change to a 6400 and a p5b deluxe! would save you a decent amount of money and will also clock like crazy, mine at 3.2ghz is still only on stock volts

If you are getting an intel dual core the only choice is really the e6300 or the e6600. They clock so well so you should get the cheapest version of the 2mb cache or cheapest 4mb cache.

Only issue with the 6300 is the lack of any usable multiplier... If you're after a decent clock, the E6400/E6600's are probably a better way to go :)

What do you regard as a decent clock? The e6300's have been passing 3ghz with ease with many achieving clocks representing an increase of 70-80%. I would regard that as a 'decent' clock.

Revised Spec:

Intel Core 2 DUO E6400 "LGA775 Allendale" 2.13GHz (1066FSB) - OEM (CP-137-IN)
G.Skill 2GB DDR2 HZ PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS4 Dual Channel Kit (F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ) (MY-013-GS)
Gigabyte GA_965P_DS4 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard (MB-062-GI)

this allows me to get a decent graphics card too. the e6400 should reach 3.2 with the memory i chose with 1:1

does the p5b deluxe suffer from the 1.8v boot problem?

Hi sorry i know this hasnt got anything to do with your post but in about a month im going to be doing the same as you (so it kinda has)

Im going to be spending about £800 but one of my friends is able to get half price Intels and i was wondering what one i should get, because i could get the EE for £350 but does that leave me with enough to get a x1900 and 2gbram and a mobo? so duno what cpu i should get because half price Duo is a bargain of a life time!

and before anyone asks no i dont think i can get anymore than 1/2 :)

Thanks

Jacob

well it looks like the e6400 oem's have gone from ocuk's site. so i cant get that.. which puts me a little over budget.

i need to know if what i have chosen is going to work..

E6400
DS4
G.Skill 6400HZ

another thing ive just noticed is that the ds4 has heatpipes to cool the chipset, in my case the board will be mounted upside down. will these heatpipes still work?

yes, i think the only problem is the ram voltage that you just need to set to the correct volts for your g.skill ram but other than that i should think everything will be A-ok :D, and i'd go with the 6400 as you say due to the multiplier and the fact that they clock like crazy :), i just need some better ram to really make use of my chip and push it to the XTREEEEEEEEEEM

3ghz is ok, decent clock would be 3.5+. Thats just a personal thing, for most people 3ghz gives plenty of ooomph :)
