All you non overclockers tell me why you don't overclock?

I'll hazard a guess, from speaking to friends, that most non-overclockers don't overclock as they believe they will "fry their chips" due to the increased temperatures.

im pretty sure its the frying the chip thing that scares most people, thing is most chips are industructable now a days i know ive put to many volts through my chip before and it just reset it self on post there isnt really much of a danger as there used to be, of course there is still a little risk though ;)

I spent so much on my bike I can't afford to replace any more motherboards.

using my "spare" motherboard now! :|

my guess, people just don't understand overclocking enough and so think it's the devil's work! i still remember the first time i overclocked my old amd 3500+ winchester and got a black screen running around crying thinking i've killed my cpu! once i finally realised i just needed to reset cmos i told myself i'l never overclock again just too dangerous and urm now look at me :p sat with a 6400 @ 3.2ghz on stock volts on air :D

Overclocking is garunteed to reduce the life of your CPU. Some people simply don't want to update their CPU every few months, or year.

If you want to have a CPU for a few years, don't overclock it's ass into oblivion.

I stopped overclocking because I found that I'd overclock a computer loads - and then word process or watch films on it :o

oi tom leave me alone :( i'm running the p5b deluxe so i can't set lower mem dividers this is why i haven't gone further i've been windows stable at 3.4ghz on stock volts :p but my ram was at 850mhz up from it's stock 667mhz so that's pretty impressive! will try for higher later :p see how far this geil value 5300 stuff will go

I usually overclock but on sunday i backed my E6600 back to stock.
I really didn't see a point in having O/Ced to 333x9. yeah it gave me 12700ish in 3dm05 compared to 11600ish @ stock, but i dont "play" benchmarks & in game terms thats maybe 3-5 fps extra.
I built this new system to last & when my componant start to lag behind again thats when i'll start overclocking again.
I like my systems to last & with my E6600 i know i can get it above 3.2ghz (& higher) as it hit 3ghz so easily & without a temp change. :D
So untill i see that its needed i wont be overclocking for a while.

It's not as though many CPUs will reach the end of their natural lifespan anyway, they just need to last till the next upgrade...

Overclocking a processor could actually lengthen its effective life- once our P75 became too useless to run such gaming monoliths as Mechwarrior 2, we overclocked it to P120 specs. It blew up 3 months later, because back then cooling basically meant blowing on it if you smelled burning, but it still lasted 3 months longer than it would have otherwise, since we'd have binned it.
