Vodafone phoned me up last night, about 8 months into an 18 month contract and offered me an extra 6 months contract in exchange for £25 bill credit. When I refused and put the phone down, I realised what I'd actually told them at the beginning.

Some lady phones me up and says "Hello Sir, I'm calling from Vodafone, can you answer me a few security questions before we proceed? What is your full name, your address, postcode & DOB". All of which I duely answered.

However, I realise now that at the time, I had no proof that she was actually from Vodafone, she could have been anyone, phoning a random number and getting them to divulge all details.

Just thought I should have been a bit more cautious really. Is there anyway to actually get *them* to prove who they are?

Tell them you'll answer those questions providing they prove who they are first.

Ask them what was the exact amount of your bill last month or how many texts/minutes you used last month.

I work for Vodafone and may be able to help.
When Vodafone calls you for any reason, a note is left on your account (the same as if you contact us), 1 way to confirm to it is Vodafone, is to advise them you would like to call them back. It is very doubtfull you will speak to the same person, however, as a note is left on your account, any advisor will be able to confirm what the call was about.

The problem you will have with asking them to confirm what your last bill amount was etc, is if you have not completed DPA/ security questions, legally they will not be aloud to discuss your account.

But then I'd have to wait in the queing system (and pay?) only to find out they were trying to extend my contract!

Agreed you would have to que (unless you rang during a quiet period, usually between 2pm - 4pm), 191 is a free number from your mobile on contract.
