Here's some interesting news... http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=4682

NVIDIA is using back the GTS naming for their mainstream cards and is preparing to launch their GeForce 8600 series codenamed G84 in April. There will be 2 models; GeForce 8600 GTS and GeForce 8600GT and they are priced at $249-$299 and $199-$249 respectively. Interestingly, there is no G81 or GeForce 8900 series we heard. There is something more powerful brewing over at NVIDIA.

And here... http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=4690

We told you earlier about NVIDIA skipping G81 or GeForce 8900 to go straight for something more powerful. It seems like INQ has insider scoop that NVIDIA mulling the successor to G80 but still would like to produce GX2 if they managed to solve the thermal and power issues. After that it will be time for G9x flavour, codenamed G90. NVIDIA is planning to produce 65nm G9x chips based on G80 architecture with much higher frequencies and powered with GDDR4. If NVIDIA makes G80 smaller there may also be just enough space for 512Mbit controller. If all goes as planned, the chip is scheduled for second part of 2007.

Interesting, eh? :)

If G90 comes out, I will be buying 2 of them straight. But we probably won't see them till summer period tho.

Thats blown my plans right out of the water :(

Going to get r600...delayed...delayed again
Going to get 8900gtx...not geting made

so its a choice of the following

Just buy a 8800gtx now.

or

8800gts as a stop gap until I upgrade to a 24"then sell it and get a newer
card to run the higher res.

oh great
yet more hilariously long graphics cards that most people will struggle to fit into their case...

Even if they are hot, expensive and slow than the ATi equivalent? :p

We wouldn't know about the slow part would we.

Price, top end cards frm both nvidia and ati = always have been more or less the same.

hot = not too much of a concern here, on water-cooling.

Nvidia said before they released the 8800GTX that it would be power hungry and fast, they also said its successor would not be 'much' faster as they would concentrate on getting the power requirements down.

But a process shrink should allow them to get some clock speed improvement while getting the power right down :). Hope so, Id like a new card, but decided from the outset that it wouldnt be an 8800 series.

not bad, nvidia gonna try and get a 2 generation gap over ati this time.

looks like i better sell all my shares in ati right now.

8900 in 3 weeks Easyrider?. :D

That's my 3 week wait plan right out the friggen window lol. Or is it?.

I don't know how a card that was meant to be "coming to a store near you" in 3 weeks could suddenly be disregarded like that?. In fact would they not have thousands made already?.

I hope it's not true as I had my heart set on this 8900 :(. If not though I can still get the 8800 ;). No biggie.

the 8900 was a G80 based chip with faster clocks available from a smaller core. now G90 is a G80 based chip with faster clocks available from a smaller core oooooo and we might, if you all pray really hard smack in a 512mbit controller, wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

is it just me or is that, we're pushing back whatever we wanted to do with G90, calling G81 G90 now? if they think the 8900 will be faster than the x2800 cards there is NO NEED TO RUSH a new generation out. the later they can release the proper next gen card the cheaper then can make it, the higher the yeilds the more profit they make on current cards. if anything, they are just delaying their next cards to save money because ati took so long. nothing, absolutely nothing about this news is good. several months more for 65nm and 100Mhz extra on the same architechture because they see a chance to increase profits, why do we let them get away with it? marketing, they make you think you want the G90 and don't tell you its what they had planned all along for G81.

lol. nvidia doesn't care if its 1% ahead of 90% ahead of ati, but it prefers 1% because it leaves a weapon in the locker and costs them less and either way every nvidia box says "faster gfx card ever".

afaik TSMC were having trouble with 65nm earlier this year/last year which is why the offered 80nm around to everyone as 65nm was just crappy yields. theres no promise a "G90/81" card would beat a x2800 already, how many process changes have gone bad and not hugely increased clock speeds? x2800 will already have the 512mbit bus, and more memory for the same price.

it'll be an interesting year anyway.

think of it this way, in two days imagine ati leak info which appears in exact same way as this and says something along the lines of " ati have apparently kept the lid on some amazing information, they are skipping the x2800xtx completely and releasing a x3800xtx instead. the x2800xtx was having issues with heat as it was, not as expected, on a 80nm process. this turned out to be too hot but TSMC said they could make a 65nm run and ati had just taped out a 65nm working version that was due by the end of the year. it has worked perfection so they will simply skip forward to the x3800xtx and release it a month late, this is why the 1-2 month delay we talked about last week".

its all about marketing and upsetting the rumours and putting people off buying something from the "other" company just before it comes out. though it sounds like they are doing something great, its really the exact same thing, delayed, for minimal benefit, that just lines their pockets with OUR money.

This is ooold news :p

G90 seems to be a g70 to g71 style transition.

Shrink, tweak, clock & a change of ram.

Now ati needs to make sure that the x2900xtx well and truly kicks the 8800gtx's butt. :)

Is this certain ?
So many rumours i don't know if I am coming or going ...
I was waiting for R600, but some say its released end of the month, others that it will be over 2 months away ...
So I am thinking if no ATI anouncement by the months end, I will look at the 8900GTX .... and now you say it isn't going to be ?
Reportedly nvidia has the card ready for spoiling ATI's launch, if thats the case with so much invested they may as well release it and get some income, either the rumors of launch spoiling were just rumours, or Nvidia are making a poor business decision ...
