buy 8800 now or buy r600 later and regret ever buying it.
r600 is gonna be a rushed project and as always the drivers are going to be flaky to say the least.
look at the x1900 series, only now are decent drivers starting to appear to make the card useable. give it till 2008 and the x1900 drivers should be near perfect.
just, what? vista drivers are only just working for nvidia, sli for 8800 series isnt' available, they are apparently remarkably dodgey still and this is, wait, 6 months after the cards were out. since when do ati have bad drivers, been using my x1900 for around a year, a x1800 before that and i can't really remember any real issues in the whole time with any game not working. likewise in years past with x800's, 9800's, 5900, 6800's there are always a couple issues found in new games on both sides of the fight. also fixes for said games within days of launch when very few people even have the games yet. even the games with issues are generally playable but like AA doesn't work or something along those lines.
everyone, but everyone with a 8800 has been bemoaning crappy drivers lately. some people complain about ati's too, both are pretty solid to be fair.
also assumgin cyber was joking about the r600, as in, its 100% not true, but i don't know if he's joking or he really believes it himself
fact is, the 8900 on 80nm or 65nm will have either lesser or equal specs to the x2800. if its 65nm it might have a clock speed advantage, IT MIGHT NOT. if its 80nm they won't fit a 512mbit bus in which puts all specs equal cept lower bus. they will both be very very similar cards all told. likewise the 8800/8900 are going to be virtually identical anyway.
ati ARE late to the dx10 cards, but vista is only just out so there wasn't dx10 till just now, there is still not a single dx10 game out. not even sure what the first game will be, is stalker dx10 now? if so it will be out within 1-2 weeks of ati's cards most likely. ati lost the enthusiast race to the highest 3dmark score, but the marketing score. if they can claim and spout all around the world that they had the first working dx10 card and drivers out with sli support that carrys a lot of weight in the press. enthusiast race = 0.00005% of the market. marketing race can win the rest of it, really, it can.
