Dynamic Disk offline

This is what I see in disk management:

It tells me that all data will be lost if I convert the offline dynamic volume to basic. Ive also googled it and it was suggested that u need to convert the OS disk to dynamic to be able to read the dynamic disk.

It also says when u go convert the OS disk to dynamic that no other OS can read from it (and I like to dual boot sometimes).

I just upgraded to a new motherboard and I installed windows xp pro 64-bit freshly and disk 2 was recognised 100%. I have changed the CPU cooler and then am greeted with this offline malarky when I get the PC back together (its possible I didnt put the SATA cables back exactly in the same order).

I could reinstall the operating system (since windows xp pro 64-bit recognised this disk from a fresh install). Surely this is not necessary though?

I had trouble getting this drive recognised when I purchased it. I added it to an existing operating system via some little wizzard which popped up when I accessed the disk manager.

Nb. The first 2 disks are "basic" and disk 2 is "dynamic". This is where the problem lies.

The other option is to convert the operating system disk to "dynamic" (which apparently stops other operating systems accessing it). I could copy over the data onto disk 2 (will probably fit; hence could format it back to basic).

Looks to me the simplest thing to do is a reinstall without changing the status of my disks. Im assuming it will work cause I only reinstalled the OS last week, and it could access disk 2 no problem.

Just makes me think that if u can solve this with an OS reinstall, then there must be a way to get this disk recognised again without the reinstall.

No its greyed out, only reactivate disk (which does nothing) and convert to basic (i.e. format).

Ive just converted disk 0 to dynamic (apparently cant be seen by OS previous to windows 2000), and I still cant use the offline disk. The OS made me reboot cause it was installing the disk but its still offline. Only option now is to reinstall my OS, unless there are any other ideas.

I had the same problem when I upgraded to Vista 64-bit. Dynamic disks are not recognised by vista home premium so I had to convert the disk from synamic back to basic. Is this what you are looking to do?

If so it can be done with a hex editor. It worked for me and I'm looking for the site now.

No cause I have more data on that drive than spare space on the rest. Ive already installed an OS with the drive as it is and it was set up correctly. As I said I had trouble getting the disk to initialize on a pre-existing OS, which is when it got converted to dynamic.

Sorry I didn't read the first post properly. There is a way to convert from dynamic back to basic without data loss. I could try dig up what I used to do so if you like.

Ok thx, thinking of an OS install atm.

Ok. Found this, basically the same guide that I followed but also came across this. It's not as scary as the second link makes it sound but I thought I should add it as a kind of disclaimer. If you decide to go ahead with it I found the required disk probe here.

keep us posted.

Thx very much it worked!

Already got one but cheers for the offer. Glad it worked and I'm going to bookmark the site's this time as they were a bitch to find.

Just installed a WD Caviar Green 1Tb. I cancelled the wizard and initialized the disk and it came up as basic right away.

I know its not a speed demon but I will speed test it anyhow. You can't run quick tests for reliability and (lack of) noise.
