8800GT monday??

Sorry to ask but have not been keeping an eye on the gfx card market since getting my GTS 640, but these are faster then a GTS640 right? If so should then should I stop wasting my time on these forums & stick my GTS up for sale before the price drops like a stone?

It appears from multiple (unoffilcial) sources that the new 8800GT is about 20% faster than the old 8800GTS 640. Nobody knows for sure yet how well they will overclock, or whether OCing will yeild the same results as existing 8800's. Some people have speculated the 256bit memory bus may be a limitation at high overclock frequencies.

Is it worth the hassle of selling one 8800 card to buy a new one? That depens on you, but I personally will wait until something significantly better comes along in the same price range.

Well I am selling my whole rig in january when I leave the country so thinking that the new GT would be worth more in Jan then the old GTS.

Also there is the shiny new box of computer parts being delievered factor which is always good

And If I had a 640Mb GTS I'd wait till the 19th November and see what the new GTS is like.

I'm only swapping because of my small memory (320Mb). I'd settle on the new cards being as fast.

And oc wise they should be good. BFG and EVGA are both at 700Mhz on the core from the 600 standard so 16%.

If you look at the GTS market, stock was 500Mhz and the fastest pre clocked was 588 (EVGA) so that was 17% oc.

So they ought to oc the same as the 8800 GTS and in theory maybe better due to the smaller die but some of that is taken up by the higher stock speed already.

The one "review" got theres to 731 stable so we might be exactly back to GTS days where every card seems to run fine at 631?

Only worry is the temps. The dodgy review got the temps to 86 degs I think at stock. Something to be said about double slot coolers.

I would imagine a lot of people will be replacing the obviously pants stock cooler on these cards.

I am going to keep hold of my 8800GTS 640. There is nothing it cannot run well at 1680x1050 so there's no real point (other than willy waving) in changing. I think the old GTS have a year to 18months left in them, so I'll buy whatever is best for ~£200 then.

The new 8800's are only a die shrink and minor change anyway. They don't even save much on power.

Although I agree with your logic about keeping your card, the new 8800's are more than just a die shrink.

They have 16 extra stream processors for starters and since the major differences in speed in the 8 series family is the number of sp then that's more than a minor change.

die shrink = faster stock and oc clocks (500Mhz stock increased to 600Mhz stock)

less power is a side benefit.

It would seem we need GTX MkII anyway in order to play forthcoming DX10 titles at decent frame rates, so I would hang on until then and just be happy that you've got a card that can play DX9 titles well enough.

I think if you were going from a last generation card, then fair enough, but the previous gen 8800's haven't become dogs overnight!

then why is mine barking :p

Wish more would offer dual-slot cooling solution; will most likely have to replace the stock cooler unless there's gonna be some good ones from the start?

Rather than start a new thread can someone advise on:

1. How long the cards are (hopefully not bigger than my current 7900GTO)
2. How you can tell if your motherboard is compatible (does it need to be PCI-E 1.1?) again my mobo is an Asus P5W-DH Deluxe

Thanks

hmm normally if it's on sale for Monday it should have been available for pre-order a few days before?

Also normally the OCUK vanilla version won't be available until the cards have been released for a while, so expect to see only the BFG & EVGA models on Monday.
