I went to reformat/reinstall windows on my new vostro 1700 and it crashed on the last section of "completing installation". What shall I do? I had to reset it as it had been like that for about 2 hours, doing nothing on the same level on the progress bar.
Shall I just restart the installation?

Hello panthro, yes I think you will be better of just restarting the whole installation process again, instead of trying to restart the process from the point where it had crashed. :) When it comes to the, creating a partition part, once you have made one, make sure that you format it first and then install Windows Vista. :)

Hey panthro, in my opinion it is always best to format the partition that you are looking at installing an Operating System on first.

Now to do this, first create a partition (If you haven't already done so) by selecting the Hard Drive that you wish to use and then going to the "Drive options (advanced)" and this will bring up an extra 4 options, "New", "Format", "Delete" and "Extend". Click on the "New" option and then select how large you would like that particular partition to be. Once you have done that, select the appropriate partition and then press the "Format" button. Once the formatting process has completed, make sure the right partition is selected (The one you have formatted) and then click "Next". :)

Im probably being dumb, but where is this option? As now all I have access to is the BIOS. I cant get into windows as it keeps crashing towards the end of installation.

Hey panthro, sorry I wasn't very clear in my last post.

Re-boot your machine and boot of the Vista DVD. The first screen that appears will ask you to choose your language, time and currency formats, and keyboard or input method. Once you have selected the right values, click "Next". It will now ask you to Install or repair Windows Vista, click on "Install Now". This next screen that appears will ask you for your Product Key, so enter your product key and then click "Next". Then it will ask you to agree to the Windows Vista End User License Agreement (EULA), check the box and click "Next". (Nearly their :p) It will now ask you to choose an Installation type, select the "Custom (Advanced) option.

We are now onto the screen where it asks you where you would like to install Windows Vista. Firstly create a partition (If you haven't already done so) by selecting the Hard Drive that you wish to use and then go to the "Drive options (advanced)" button, this will bring up an extra 4 options, "New", "Format", "Delete" and "Extend". Click on the "New" option and then select how large you would like that particular partition to be. Once you have done that, select the appropriate partition and then press the "Format" button. Once the formatting process has completed, make sure the right partition is selected (The one you have formatted) and then click "Next". :)

Well, having done that, its still not working.

The task bar is about 60% of the way through of "2 Installing Windows" and it hasnt moved for a long time.

EDIT - or am I being impaitent? Its just that theres no sign of the HDD doing anything and its been like that for about 1 hr.

Hey panthro, theirs defiantly something wrong since it shouldn't be taking that long. The only thing I can currently think of is maybe your Windows Vista DVD disc is scratched or dirty and needs a bit of a clean? :)
