I got this today and have been playing it for about 8 hours now :p

If anyone is bored of the same drudge that FM serves up every year, this makes a welcome change, the matches are 3d and very interesting to watch, extremely customisable as well.

I have to admit to being disgraceful at Football Manager, I am finding Champ man much easier, im sitting 6th in the SPL after 25 games, with St Mirren, i usually get relegated or scrape 11th. I am also running about 8 leagues and it flies along, much much faster than Footie Manager.

Well worth a look for fans

FM is harder cos its more realistic, CM may be easier but if you can win the league in your first season it soon gets boring, and the gameplay is a lot more in depth on FM, i wouldnt waste my money on CM tbh

CM seems like its trying to hard to be different and better than FM, and it just fails miserably really. FM is the natural successor to the old champ man's, so it always wins in my book.

I've been playing Champ/Football Man for 14 years. I'd feel ashamed of myself if I went anywhere near that abomination that is the current Champ Man.

FM all the way.

There are those who know that Eidos and Sports Interactive split up and those that don't. There are those that know that Eidos took the name from the divorce and that SI got the database. There are those that know that the database made the game and so buy the SI games which are called Football Manager 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 etc and those that think that the Championship Manager brand MUST be the game to play. There are those that buy FM and those that buy CM. There are those with brains and those without. Those with brains buy FM, those without buy CM. ;) :p Good things come to those that wait etc blah blah blah. :D

Seriously though I've tried every CM demo since I was started on FM05 by a mate. Everytime the interface and UI for the CM demo was just really confusing and didn't make sense. The only reason CM still sells is that people getting into the football management sims aren't aware of the split and that FM is the spiritual heir to the throne that the old Eidos/SI games once possessed.

I also feel sorry for those kids who ask their parents or relatives for Football Manager for Christmas. Those relatives duly plod off to a shop to get the game but see the Championship Manager game or just ask someone in the shop who just hands them a copy of CM. Imagine the pain and despair on Xmas morning when instead of seeing FM they see CM peering up at them with evil eyes. Won't someone please think of the kids? :(

Btw this post isn't entirely 100% serious in anyway. Its just a joke.

Well for the record, I was a contributor for my team (St Mirren) for 3 years on Football Manager 3 and the next two updates, and have been playing it since the original Champ Man on the Amiga (how good was Chris Bart Williams in that game? :P )

I just find FM08 too sterile now, i know its accurate, but i also find it dull. I played a full season on CM08 yesterday and really enjoyed myself, i know its not realistic (I ended up 4th in the SPL), but it was fun, which really is the main factor in a game for me.

Even PC Gamer gave it about 80% so its definetly improving not just in my eyes.

I know what you mean, games should be fun, before they are anything else, they should be fun. I hated Eve because it felt like a job, not a game. There is just something in FM that brings out the stats geek in me :)

Light-hearted, maybe. Also,100% correct :) The years of hard work that has gone into the database is what makes the game (FM) as good as it is. Nothing else comes close.
Hehe thanks. It was just a jest, a bit of a dig. :) Unless I'm very much mistaken the makers of CM (Eidos) aren't as close and in contact with their customers as SI are to us?

Football Manager 3?! I assume you mean CM3? :p

Any idea what they gave FM08? To make a proper comparison we need the same mag or site to review both the SI and Eidos versions and see what score they give each. ;)

So you stay in on a full moon then? :p

Any new stuff in fm2008? apart from the season updates? I mean real new stuff that makes a difference - not cleaner interfaces, skim jobs etc. Or prolly just as well to play fm2007 with mods?

Erm not really. I like FM08 but there isn't really any single killer change for me apart from the UI and updated db. You might as well stay with FM07 and just download any new tactics, graphics etc that you want. The graphics should be compatible. For example until there are graphic packs for FM08, FM07 packs should be OK so I would assume there is backwards compatability as well.

Bear in mind as well that any databases released for FM08 (whether official or not) will not work for FM07 but tbh you'd probably be using the same db happily.

There's some gubbins with the new file format they are using (.fmf) so I'd be careful when using 07 skins/etc in 08. I'm not a skinner so I can't really help much more, just a heads up :)

That is a good point MoratJG. Skins are the obvious things that will have changed between versions. I've never tried to get an FM06 skin to work in FM07 etc and I wouldn't expect it to work either.

Yeh of course, CM3 :)

I think they gave pretty similar reviews, both were in the 80's.

I didnt know Eidos and SI split... I did play CM religiously until one release (prob the split) where it went pear shape and i havent played since. However I have picked up a copy of FM08 tonight and will start playing. Also signed up for the FMonline beta hopefully i get in hehe.

Eidos probably didn't publicise the split very well. ;) They must have known that it was SI Games that made the game and not the name. I've tried each CM demo since FM05 came out and FM wins hands down every time.
