Ok. Now the new year is nearly upon us I am wanting to change what I do in my life. As I now am single (still living with ex but will be selling up in the new year and going our sperate ways) I am wanting to do something different and help others out.

I am looking into a few options;

1. Leaving for Mexico. Maybe for a year. Im not sure yet. I have been looking into the pro's and con's of doing this but still requires more indepth study

2. Back packing across the globe. This I have no idea on. Well I know a few things about it as I have some freinds who have done this. I would like to know more.

Has anyone here done any of this? I am looking into finding out how much money I may need to fund such a massive task, where to start and what route is best to take.

I would like to help out doing charity work, as this would make the whole experience a lot better imo, more than likely in the so called 3rd world countries.

If anyone here can point me in the right direction and offer some tips on money or what to do I would be most gratefull. I will be making the effort to start saving after xmas has passed and I know once I hand in my notice at work I should have around £3000 to put towards the funding.

I am not rushing into this adventure but making sure I get as much information as possible to ponder over before hand. I would be taking someone with me, a good freind.

Over to you.
:)

Sounds like a very interesting trip, totally agree about not rushing the planning or saving up, go when you're ready.

www.gapyear.com would be a good site to start off at, lots of information and a fairly helpful forum.

Best route is totally dependant on where you want to go and what you want to see, as you're looking at going for around a year I'm sure a Round the World air ticket would be the best, they are anywhere from £800-£1600 depending upon where you're going to go, they are valid for a year and would include all you're flights (if you wanted them to)

Price is really hard to say without knowing where you'd be going or how long you will stay in each place. Something in the region of £5,000-£12,000 I'd guess at.

Mexico is an amazing place, but in my opinion, not amazing enough to do a whole year there.

You can easily do around the world for the £10,000 mark.
Many of my friends have done, and are doing, a similar sort of thing. 2 girl friends are currently doing a 3 month tour for about £4,000, but living very well - japan, china, vietnam, fiji, new zealand, australia, mexico, Usa

I'd recommend spending half your time in Asia, make sure you visit Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, China etc.. then flying to South America to do those countries.. New Zealand is worth a visit..

Thanks for the replies people. I will have alook at that gapyear site later. Im at work from 11 till 10 today so wont have much time to reply on here.

I know we can do it on a really tight budget or spend a lot on flights etc. I would prefer to do the budget version. Visiting africa, Asia and the Americas.

I will have a word later with my friend and see what is said.

Cheers.

Mexico is an amazing place, but in my opinion, not amazing enough to do a whole year there.

..

I have been to Mexico before. Only for a 10 day holiday and that was on the Carribean side of it. I would love to go across the whole of Mexico and maybe work there. I know they dont get paid lots but with enough money behind me Im sure I can live comfy for 12 months over there.

Bar work, or even Voluntary work in the developing areas is what I would do.

Like I said in my OP. I have looked into this already but need more in depth info before even going ahead with it.

I was looking at the Gapyear site (very good) they have lots of information on there.

I would probably go for UK-Sweden/Denmark-Russia-China-India-Indoneisia-OZ-NZ-Arg-Chili-Bolivia-Peru-Ven-Mexico-US-Canada and finish off Somewhere hot for a month for a holiday.

This is my ideal route anyway.

How long are you thinking of going for Droolingimp, 16 Countries in a year would be a real push, that is 2-3 weeks in each county which is not enough for China, Indonesia, OZ, US or Canada to see them in any kind of detail, I'd advise working in some "relax time" into any route people do, 1 or 2 weeks every few months to just sink into a culture or sit on a beach and gather you're thoughts on everything you've seen otherwise it's just planning, working out timetables, flights and finding places to stay and that can really ware you down after awhile.

Whatever you decide I’m sure it will be brilliant, I’ve done a few mini trips but nothing on the scale of a year. Hopefully my 8month trip will be starting this year so I’m getting my planning together.

I'm sort of in the same boat as you. I split up with my long term gf earlier this year, and am currently pondering something similar. I have a house, which I'll try and rent out for the duration of the trip, so I'll have something to return too, and should help on the financial side of things too

I'd personally say go for it, you'll probably not be in the same position in life again where you have this freedom to experience such an adventure.
