When does CPU speed become pointless?

I've been thinking about all the reviews recently of the C2Q's, C2D's and Phenoms and how the Q6600 is so much better etc. but all the tests are only carried out at low resolutions to show the CPU's power. At what resolution would the CPU's speed not matter? Surely there's a point where as long as the CPU is fast enough it's not going to improve fps' anymore than an uber clocked processor?

Just a thought, I'm probably just going mad :D

You mean gaming at low res? Its only to show relative performance much like 3dmark, its obviously not a real-world use of the application.

So why don't we ever see real world applications? Why not compare a Q6600 to an E6600 and a Phenom at say 1920x1200? Surely that'd be a fairer way to do it, unless people actually game at 800x600?

You'd be GPU limited at that res so the cpu wouldn't really make a difference.

Most games are bound by the GFX card not the GPU, you could have a CPU running at 10Ghz but if the GFX card can't render that quick it will make no difference

Well, not everyone games at that res, plus people do actually use PC's for things other than gaming. ;)

I think you could've stopped at 'not everyone games'. :p

Or at least, they may find other uses for their PC other than gaming such as high-quality film editing, photoshop (yes, if you use a photoshop filter on a high-res image you'll appreciate having a fast CPU), even rudimentary tasks such as using WinRAR or creating disk images. Then there's 3D rendering, audio editing and encoding (not necessarily music, but often so)...

If you're just gaming on your PC, you're best off getting a bog standard CPU and putting the extra cash into a better graphics setup.

This is like the 'cache doesn't affect performance' argument, there are applications where cache genuinely does have an impact.

Hardocp did a review of the c2d when it first come out at the gpu bound rez to show that cpu is not really all that.
lots of people flamed them and claimed hardocp were biased.

turns out that there are far more people out that that game at 640x480 with all low details on high end gfx cards, than i thought there were.

always remember:

gamex might be gpu bound on your current pc using curent play settings with say 2ghz cpu. but when you upgrade graphics in say a year, you may find that you get 0 additional fps at those settings because cpu was running almost maxed out before. but a faster cpu in the system now will give a boost in the future, tho dont spend to much on it. its never worth paying for EE / QX / FX cpu's... ever. even if you plan to oc, spend the cash on 10 normal cpus pick the best sell on the rest. but its often worth paying say £20 to go up from lower mid range to upper midrange/low performance class. if only because a higher stock multiplier alows you to spend less on a OC mobo as you wont need so high of a fsb to max the chip out ;)

The main point here is the quicker your cpu, the larger your eManhood is. This must be why women dont like me, i only have a puney athlon64 4000+ :(

so that explains why women have been fawning over me recently, since i upgraded to an overclocked Q6600!
