Rather than continue hijacking others' threads re. this, it felt better to start my own thread. Especially as my circumstances may be slightly different to others. So sorry if this is going over old ground. Have also read other similar threads.

My XP laptop is up for replacement soon and I have a limited work offer of a discounted iMac. So the question is, why should/shouldn't I?!

The dilemma exists because I don't have a problem with PCs currently, but something tells me I should perhaps take up the Mac offer, but may still regret it.
My use is mainly email, internet, photos, ect - usual run of the mill bar gaming.

The thing bugging me, is the idea of running both systems (XP/Mac) and constantly chopping and changing. It would almost be easier of Bootcamp didn't exist - then I would have to convert wholesale to Mac file systems ect.

The Pros and Cons on the face of it:

NO:
1. I have no problem as such with PCs or the software.
2. None of my Colleagues or friends run Mac systems.
3. I HATE expensive (or any) computer repairs.

YES:
1. The offer is limited - it's now or never!
2. Bootcamp means I can still use any PC specific apps
3. For no obvious reason, it seems like a good idea!

Opinions?

Go for it, if you even have a small want to. Your usage sounds ideal for a Mac to be honest.

Have you heard of Parallels or VMWare? It allows you to run Windows within OS X and you can run most Apps in that if you need to. 3d applications like games aren't supported though.

You'll find yourself using Windows less and less the more and more you use it (OS X). :)

Macs are usually reliable so repairs shouldn't be an issue. Most people who make the switch are pretty pleased they did. If you like things to "just work", Mac has the edge over PC.

I switched 2 months ago and have not looked back, got vmware working with xp so I can on rare occasions use win based stuff but it is rare that I use it.

If you are happy with Windows then dont change. :) I found it hard to adapt and had to go back to Windows as Mac didnt feel right for me, hence im selling my MacPro(not the main reason)

Sounds to me like the bottom line is you need a new computer. If you are offered a Mac at a great price (expense is probably the main reason people are put off) then what have you got to lose?

If you find OS X to be a pile o' crud then you have yourself a nice little Windows box anyway. :)

Is there an alternative I'm missing?

No, there's no alternative from my perspective - Mac or Windows.

I've heard of Parallels - in fact, I would buy it at the same time as the Mac. It seems like the most ingenious piece of software, and the answer to many of my problems possibly!

I like the idea of 'things just working' - but I've had that for the past 3yrs with my XP laptop. The old phrase 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' keeps springing to mind!

If someone were mostly happy with their PC, why should they cross over!?

For fun? The main reason is for the OS. However despite people telling you all the advantages in this and other threads and your still not sure you might as well stay with a PC. Sounds like you are really reluctant to switch.

Because OS X is a better designed, more modern OS. On the downside, there's a 50% chance that your mind turns to jelly and you become a weird cultist.

Nice. :D

I'm considering a macbook for next year's computer science MA at the moment, and the g/f has orders to deliver a swift coup de grâce if I ever start talking like a believer.

Had a play with one in the Exeter apple shop, and after half an hour's fiddling I had it set up exactly as I wanted. I found that once I'd got home to my XP machine again I'd started using apple shortcuts and desktop features by accident. The interface is just better imho. A much more pleasant user experience.

You could just get the Mac on the premise it's a very nice and very well built system that you can get for a good price, You don't have to use OSX, you could just use bootcamp and have it boot up in Windows all the time and you will have yourself a very classy windows machine.

Saying that you shouldn't overlook OSX, you will have a machine that can run 2 OS's so you could dabble. There is something very special about owning a Mac. I remember when
I got my MacBook, it was like a special occasion just opening the box!

Yeah, all these things I know to be true.

It's just making that change, and change can be hard!

I guess I should get to an Apple shop and try Parallels, see how it unfolds in real practice.

I switched because I wanted a "change", for one of a few things.

Glad I did, and now I prefer to use OS X over Windows where I can :)

..I'm slowly transitioning my family to Macs

Quick thing to add that might help you.

Im sure apple will refund the macbook within a certain number of days if you are not happy with it? That will give you a good time to use OSX, well atleast more so than using it in a shop.

Someone might need to clarify that though.

Yeah, trying ones not a problem. It's just the long term scenario.

As I said before, It would almost be easier if OSX didn't have Bootcamp. Then I would have to convert wholesale.

You don't have to install Bootcamp ;)

I've yet to need Windows and I came from a hardcore gamer rig.
