Lots of people dont seem to understand how external drives work so i thought i'd show people.

This external caddy allows for 3.5" desktop sata I/II drives to be used. It allows connection to pc via usb2 or esata (same speed as sata so very fast).

You can either use esata ports on your motherboard if you have them or you can buy something like this which will make 1 of your sata ports on your motherboard to be used as an esata port on a pci backplate: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CB-025-AK

The power for the hdd enclosure is provided from a electrical socket plug provided with the enclosure, usb does not give enough power for a 3.5" harddrive.

Connections:

As you can see there is a power connector which is provided with the caddy which plugs into a power socket on your wall, usb connector, esata connector, on/off switch and a sata power cable socket for those who dont want to use an external power plug connected to the wall.

Bottom, where you unscrew to take aluminium case off which you later put back on once you have connected a 3.5" sata hdd:

front, the front is chrome like a mirror, the case is black aluminium:

photo without the case on, this is how it connects to a 3.5" drive, you slide it in to connect:

you will then have your 3.5" connected and ready to put the aluminium hollow case back on:

below i have marked the sata cable with a blue line to show you the sata cable (provided) connected to the esata port on my motherboard, if you dont have a port you can buy a pci bracket with esata as linked earlier:

as you can see there is a chunky power cable provided that connects to the socket on your wall.

Thats all there is too it, get full speed with esata connector or get slower speed with usb cable (also provided).

I'm using the Samsung F1 320GB with my caddy, using it for my hd cable tv box i bought which has an esata port.

Link for 320GB Samsung F1 Sata II (£35.24): http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-057-SA

Yeah, they're pretty good. I picked up one about 3 weeks ago. I've got a 750GB Samsung in it, using it to back up stuff on my main pc. Videos, Music, Downloads, Documents, Pictures.

Pretty good, and along with Allway Sync (A very good sync program), it's all done in a matter of minutes via eSata.

yeah, you get full sata speed as all its just a sata cable connecting to an external drive so 95mb/s with the samsung f1 320gb i have, usb is far slower.

Total cost was £55.20 (£35 for hdd, £20 for caddy).

Silly question - can you connect 2 PCs to the enclosure? One by eSATA the other by USB2?

I presume no - but worth the ask...

Thanks btw clocka

ps3ud0

not sure, i wouldnt advise as both will be sending signals to communicate with it, could damage it, you'd have to email icybox for a proper answer. I'm very happy with it very handy to transfer data between computers quickly via esata as long as they have esata ports.

No, you can't - it's eSATA or USB with all these type of enclosure, not both. If you need to share among PCs, then you'll need to either attach to one PC and share over the network with the other, or go the NAS route.

can you unplug and plug in esata external HD while the computer is running? just like u do with USB external.

i mite be wrong but i thought esata>sata is transparent connection so it'll be like you unplug internal sata drive which is not good :p

edit: in other word: plug and play!

yes you can "unplug", you should use the power switch on the caddy first, then pull out the sata cable. The caddy is hot-pluggable which is what i described above.

Rubbish, you can hot swap SATA cables by design.

Make sure you click the 'Safely Remove Devices' icon in the system tray first and unmount the drive. If your motherboard sets it up as a removable device that is, my old Asus A8N SLI-Premium didn't and it was a massive pain.

Same here, but it lists my internal 300GB drive but not the external 320GB lol. I use a program called Hotswap! which is basically the same as the windows safely remove thing.
