If I had £40k to invest I'd be seeking advice from a qualified professional and not from a group of strange teenagers on an internet forum.

Don't invest it in one place. Go to your bank and ask them how to invest it.

an independant advisor would be better, the bank will advise him to invest in one of their schemes
I've been looking into investments lately and have done a little home work, You should start a share portfolio with a balanced mix of companys, share prices do go down as well as up but if you have a broad mix its nothing to be afraid of.
Now is a good time to invest as share prices are low.
With 40k you could make a lot of money but i'd spend a lot of time reading before investing.

depends on the risks you want to take - if i were you i wouldn't touch the stock market with a barge pole right now.
if you want to be safe put 10% in gold and the rest in a savings account.
if you want to be a bit more risky, get more gold and some silver (physical, not paper promises)
the stock market is on a dead cat bounce at the moment but it won't continue and imo will crash bigger than you could ever think possible.

Now is IMO a terrible time to invest, as the markets are crazy. Easy to make short term profit but not so easy to make a long term buy. Just look at HBOS, they were undervalued at £5... You just can't make more than an educated guess on what'll happen next, especially with the level of net-loss market manipulation going on.
I would personally say go with something low risk. And keep less than £35000 in any one bank, for the protection.
