Best UK Webhost?

Hi there,

I'm currently with 1&1 and although they do reply very fast to email I'm not all that convinced with the cost vs features I am getting. I've been with them for a year now.

Can anyone recommend somewhere that offers the following:

~ 24/7 Support
~ PHP/SQL with DB
~ 1/2GB Webspace
~ Reliable and Good Reputation

Just a question on this issue... are there many advantages of having locally hosted sites as opposed to servers in the US? Apart from speed obviously. I read somewhere that locally hosted sites perform better in search rankings too. Any input on this? Am currently considering a move to vidahost for hosting as I have all my domains with them and support is just outstanding.

Edit: Vidahost just gone down for anyone else?

TSOhost have been fine, can't fault them.
But it's worth noting that TSOhost, Vidahost, and register1 are all run by current/ex OCUK members.
They all seem to be very competitive and I doubt you could go wrong with either.

tsoHost - IIRC Daz started it, but it's now under the company that Adz owns/runs.
Register1 - Eyedot, but I don't believe he posts here any longer. There may be other members here who have vested interests in Register1.

go with vidahost. they are seriously cheap with the new basic hosting you get a lot for very very little. Also there support is better then any other hosting place i have ever had. i went with vidahost for one of my sites and ended up switching all of them over one by one because they were so good. now all of my sites are hosted with them.

i think beansprout works for them and can be a regular poster on these forums and in this area of the forums.

Vidahost.com was down for a short period last night due to the server being rebooted, but that's completely separate from our customer hosting and is also located in Manchester. The theory is it's up if everything in London dies, but seems servers don't like being up north
