Hi there,

My brother is considering picking up a Macbook and I heard that it automatically comes with the 3-year applecare product? Is this true, or would you have to pay the £50 extra for it?

I've included it in my purchase simply because I think that the ability to phone and get support for up to three years is dead handy and it's pretty reasonable for that.

Any mac bought under HE discount has the 3 year parts and labour warranty

The extra £50 they try to sell you is just 3 year phone support, dont bother!
Is it possible to check this?
If I go to https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do and put my serial number in, i am informed of telephone support for 1 year but not details on hardware warranty.

If you look http://www.apple.com/support/service/help/warrantycheck/ over on the right there is a section to "Enroll an Education agreement" - would you need to do this to have the three year warranty?

I thought the only people who bought it were the ones who ballsed up when ordering from the HE store thinking it was required for the 3yr warranty :p

10.1.1 of this is the closest mention you get on Apple site.

tbh for the £58 I would just buy the full package. I am currently going through hassle of getting support to confirm I have 3 years via HE etc (my 1 year runs out tomorrow).

Reading other places the general consensus is you are covered for 3 years but the warranty check site will only ever show 1 yr phone support against your serial number. If you paid the £58 or bought some other applecare you get an enrollment code which will then make the site reflect your 3 year status.

People recommend this if you are selling on your mac (which technically I think is not allowed under HE conditions) as it showing 3 yrs as opposed to 1 yr means you can charge more for it etc.

To get some independent advice I would search macrumours and apple forums where the question has been asked many times.

Let us know if you manage to get it confirmed please.

It always shows as 1 year on the site, but you do have 3 years if you bought it through the HE store.

I had a battery replaced one and a half years after I bought the Mac and they said it was fine because I had three years hardware warranty.

When I sold it, the new owner can transfer the warranty to their name.

I recently had an issue with my MBP and when i phoned up applecare i asked the guy to confirm whether or not i had to register the HE agreement or not because nothing showed on the site when i logged on. He told me that i didnt have to register because it was already registered for HE sales. (i believe for none HE applecare contracts you recieve a slip with your applecare details which asks you to register it online, you dont recieve this when you purchase the HE contract as it is done automatically)
