Thought that might be the case, one of the set backs to using a beta.

They did the same thing with Vista. They've stated they will not support a beta OS.

Currently Punkbuster (the anti-cheat software built into many multiplayer games) has major compatibility issues with Windows 7. Various fixes have been discovered for x32 versions of the Beta OS, but none (until now) for x64. Punkbuster themselves have refused to support Windows 7 until RTM, so forgive the “hackiness” of the fix, but it works.

The Fix

In both C:\Windows\SYSWOW64 and C:\Windows\System32

Open PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe’s properties and enable Vista Compatibility Mode, as well as “Run as administrator”. Save.

Right click on the desktop and create a new text file, then copy paste the following:

:start

sc config PnkBstrA type= own type= interact

sc config PnkBstrB type= own type= interact

timeout 60

goto start

Save the text file as punkbuster.bat and run it (as an administrator) before joining a server.

Problem “resolved”.

Its worth a try to see if it works i suppose.

Why? Who's to say what flaws there are in current versions of Windows 7 and what changes the OS is likely to undergo before release. PunkBuster don't have limitless resources, so would you rather they spend those adding official support for a beta OS used by a tiny proportion of the playerbase, or improving their detection methods?

Fact is, W7 is in RC stage, which means it's out of BETA and code changes are frozen. There are a huge number of enthusiasts out there using the OS; the internet has gone wild for it.

Considering the fix described above, and the fact that 99% of programs work absolutely fine on W7, they need to pull their finger out and get on with it.

PB has always been a sucky program, causing a lot of crashes and problems on a variety of games. I can see their point - W7 is not totally finished, but IMO, the dev team are being complacent.

From the looks of it they just need to tweak a few files for PB to accept the Win 7 API. So that's really lazy of them. It's not going to require an overhaul

One section of the internet has gone wild for it, the vast majority couldn't care less and won't touch their OS until they upgrade, let alone install a release client. EvenBalance will have a good idea of the numbers involved.

They already will have done. But here's the rub, they won't add official support until the OS is final.

PB is a product of its environment, the myriad of different hardware and software configurations and thousands of different APIs it has to deal with. If it's really a problem for you spare a thought for the people who code the cheats and all the spotty little nerds who use them. They're the reason you have to put up with software like PB.

Can only think of this as the reason to not use Windows 7 for some people. Not sure what else, it's also in RC now.

Surely with W7 being so close to vista in drivers and whatnot anyway it wouldn't take much effort to make it work. This is the only reason I'm not using W7 on my main pc.

Yup, there is a tweak which sorted out Punkbuster for BF2 for me in Win 7, not tried out COD4 or any other PB game yet. I mainly play Source games
