These drives will fail. Backup your data now. I have learned the hardway. Im now in the process of using a CA-42 Cable to revive my Maxtor DiamondMax 22 500gb via terminal method.

Seagate will Also do a 'Free Recovery' but I'm not sure if I can trust them when they tell me to "put the drive in an Anti-Static bag and adhere the shipping label to the bag then send the drive to us" which will most definently get damaged during shipping and possibility of waiting weeks/months. (Still waiting to hear from TNT delivery service for a pick up, apparntly). I'm Just disapointing for not making a back up and that more than 40% of drives are affacted.

My Seagate 7200.11 is off on RMA now, couldn't be bothered to get the data off though, wasn't of massive importance anyway since I always (I mean always!) back important stuff up. Just lost a load of TV recordings and ripped music, which means a massive effort of re-recrding when possible and re-ripping music (though I'm planning on re-ripping in FLAC this time round!).

If you search these forums there are numerous threads on the firmware issue I had, along with some of the other issues you have highlighted.

I thought the seagate free recovery was only in the US?

I gave them a call earlier today and i was told I could get it all done for free as its a firmware problem and there not really 'recovering data' as such, just fixing the firmware and sending it back. If you RMA'd yours recently, you could try give them a call and see if they could do a data recovery instead of replacing (if your case is firmware bassed/not being reconized in BIOS).

Hmmm, interesting, perhaps should have done that now, though i've been without the data for 6 months (been waiting to RMA in case they offered recovery!), and I haven't missed much bar the music. Just a pain.

And there's the hassle with them possibly being picky about your packaging. I really don't trust that company now.

For most people I reckon - it has to take a drive to fail/they lose important data before they realise a back up method is really important.

I backup most all important files and recently backed up my laptop to my desktop in order to do a format, a day later and the 7200.11 in the desktop is dead

Sooo my 7200.11 seeks on bootup and inaccessible, the disk spins constantly

is this symptomatic of the firmware problem?

Yes, exactly the symptoms. I'm afraid it's too late for you if it's already happened, there was a preventative firmware update released a while ago.

Call up and try to get the free data recovery mentioned above.

Cheers

Will give them a bell and see what the crack is, there's some stuff on there that I would like back

I went back to the reseller in the end, as it was cheaper postage! The chap who posted above in this thread indicated he called earlier, best find out from him who he spoke to.

If you want your data recoverd for free (Firmware fix essentially), go to:
http://www.i365.com/data-recovery/index.html and click open a new case or call them on : +44 (0) 20 7432 4619

You could also check the links to the topics i posted above for tutorials on fixing it yourself using a CA-42 Nokia data cable and terminal software.

If your drive is set to a BSY state (spins but isnt reconized in BIOS) thats most likely a Firmware problem, you can double check to see if your drive is affected by entering your serial number here. https://apps1.seagate.com/rms_af_srl_chk/

Trying to update my STM3500320AS using the bootable CD and I'm getting the following error,

Turbodisk 2.1 - Drive C: unformatted
Bad or missing command interpriter: Command.com /p /e :256
Enter the full shell command line

Hard drive is still working (has vista 64bit installed) and I'm using it to type this. Any ideas?

I have a particular issue. My drive has stopped working - and came in a pre-packaged NAS enclosure, and contains a lot of sensitive company documents so I can't send it for data recovery.

Nor can I repair it without taking the nas enclosure apart - which invalidates my warranty.

Was bought from OcUK :(

Are you sure there's no hard drive caddies? Can you post a link to the enclosure on the OcUK website?

They no longer sell it it seems. It was the 1TB version of;

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-172-MD

The drive isn't field-replaceable in the 1tb version - completely different beast.

Only bought it 2 months ago or so.

EDIT: Just spoke to Seagate - they don't want to know. Tool says my drive S/N is unaffected so oply option is to have data recovered at my own expense.

Tool that determines whether a drive is affected by the bug is well-known to be incomplete - they're just denying it. I've got an open ticket with them.

Not impressed at all.

I've got a 300Gb Maxtor SATA-II in my PC which has been running strong for over 2yrs now. Also have a 1.5TBb SATA-II Seagate which has been running strong for around 9 months.
