.. but I don't think it's a bad thing. I ordered a WD 1TB caviar black WD1001FALS and paid £68.99

But look what I got, and I only just realised..

WD1002FBYS-02A6B0 a server ready RE3 drive costing £103.99. Thanks OCuk :D

Mind you, is there any real world difference between the drives?

As you have made this public, you must return the hard drive or pay the difference within 14 days.

Why? It's not my fault they sent the wrong drive is it? I've been using it for a week now anyway. It's their mistake, in the same way they took my money for a coolermaster case then told me there were none on order.

love when these things happen!

you probably won't notice any performance difference but i think they have longer life expectancy and better warranty. correct me if i'm wrong though.

Yeah, that's kind of what I read somewhere but both have 5 year warranty.
I believe the RE3 is slightly better made.

Regarding returning it, I've no intention of formatting, ripping this out of my system, sending it back, getting another drive, reinstalling the OS again, transferring all my files to it again, and reinstalling all my apps again, it's too much hassle. I might ring OC and tell them and come to some sort of arrangement but I'm not paying £35 more. I can't be held responsible for not checking a model number on a device that looks identical to the caviar black if they can't check what they send out. To be fair. I'd have no problem if I hadn't used it in the first place but it's a bit late now. :p

IIRC the RE3 are optimised for RAID environments (some tweaks and extra vibration protection).

How much better they actually are I couldn't say - I expect it's the same thing as with Samsung where the mainstream drives arn't officially waranteed if you use them in a RAID array, so businesses are expected to fork out for the expensive "RAID approved" versions.

They gave the money back though, I imagine...

Yes of course.

Dont get me wrong, I'm pleased with OCuk service overall, particularly their prices. But they did mess up with me 3 times now on my first order with them. First, I was waiting in all morning for the next day delivery that never happened. I rang them and found out that they were out of stock of the case. They never emailed me or rang me to tell me that and I could have made more money in the time they kept me in my house than the £35 extra asim likes to think I should pay them. Secondly, I rang them the following day to see if there's any news about the case. Someone told me there are none on order  I'm thinking, what the hell is going on, a case of right hand not knowing what the left hand is up to. That's when I cancelled the case. Thirdly, they sent me the wrong drive.

why did you come on here and tell everyone including ocuk ?

that kind of mistake i would keep to myself and not tell everyone on a forum from which you purchased the drive from.

they will send "the boys" round now to get there missing drive !

So they actually sent you the email to tell you your order had been dispatched, and then it didn't arrive the following day? I'm amazed by that, as if they didn't send the order, they wouldn't have been able to create the consignment number you had in your email!

Lol, yeah, I should have kept this secret, fair enough, didn't really consider the consequences of boasting about my hard drive.:p

No, to be fair, they hadn't yet send the email of dispatch. However, I had spoken to a man at OCuk the day before, monday 24th august, to make a change to the power supply I was buying and buy a slightly more expensive one, and also add a gpu cooler to my purchase.

I asked him if the parcel would definitely arrive tomorrow, tuesday 25th, and he said it yes it would, as per the next day delivery arrangement. So the next day I waited in. No email but I just assumed it would arrive because he told me so. He never said to me on the monday that there were no cases in stock nor that there were none on order. So imo, OCuk have cocked up. I'll still be doing business with them again, so they've not exactly lost a lot.

If you need to, might be an idea to raise the issues in the OcUK Customer Service section on the fourms.

Considering that if you had to return it you'd have grounds for them paying for the postage (since it's hardly your fault) and then to send the new drive out... that'd cost the best part of the £30 difference - especially since it's now used so they would probablyhave to sell it as refurbished, I'd hazard that they'll just tell you to keep it.

tbh I would've kept my mouth shut about this as well, If I did want to shout about it I'd have done it on another forum, not the forum belonging to the shop I bought the item(s) from! :p Discretion must be exercised in such situations.

A couple of years ago I wasn't charged for a £70 network switch from another online retailer... first time I've ever mentioned it and I've not ordered from them since in case they try to charge me for it!!!!
