Hi people

Against every sane nerve in my body, I decided to upgrade my cpu (then a 2.8Ghz E6300 @3.675Ghz on stock volts) to a Q9650.
It is mainly used for encoding. Anyway, I got the chip and started OCing it, I never go past stock voltage (ever!). I planned use the chip to break the 4GHz barrier.

I set the FSB to 400MHz straight away which got me 3.6Ghz and passed IBT so I continued. Next I tried 450MHz for 4GHz, my pc didn't boot. Lowered to 440, still didnt boot. I kept lowering it until it got to 410, finally it booted and passed IBT on maximum.

I tried 415MHz and my PC didn't boot so I raised the voltage to 1.3V, still no boot. I then came accross a review of my mobo, stating that the FSB was limited to 410MHz:mad:.

Getting a new mobo is out of the question because spending ~£90 for an extra 400MHz on the cpu seems a waste (so was getting the cpu but anyway), also cannot be bothered to do a clean install. So I decided to make the most of what I had. Also I don't plan anymore upgrades for at least the next 3 years.

I lowered the FSB to 400MHz to play it safe and started undervolting the chip. I was astonished with the results bearing in mind I am only using the stuff in my sig:

Q9650@ 3.6GHz|Win 7 Pro
Corsair 2X2GB PC6400 XMS2 Pro|Akasa Nero|
Gigabyte GA-P43-ES3G|Gainward Radeon 4870 1GB GS
Antec TruePowerNew 650W|NZXT Tempest|500GB Samsung F1

Look at the voltage! Now I have to live with not being able to untap the full potential of the chip:(

Be happy with what you have got!! A 3.6GHZ Q9650 is still nice to have at the heart of your computer!! Sorry to hear you could not get to 4GHZ. If it makes you feel better I only have a Q6600 at around 3GHZ(on an ancient 975X motherboard) which even the village Cat would laugh at!! Everybody seems to be having 3.5GHZ+ processors nowadays! :(

i agree and I was the same. My asus x38 mobo limited me to 414fsb but I splashed out the £100 for for my current mobo and now at 4.6Ghz stable.

Even better I got £85 for my old mobo so an easy upgrade for me.

As said most will go over 450. in fact I haven't seen one on forums which won't.

An equally good statement is that most will do 500Mhz fsb but depends on your cpu as to whether it will run at that speed unless you go for an 8 or 8.5 multi.

There is an entire thread dedicated to them on extreme systems forum with lots of results and useful advice about settings on them

Your guys are talking about his board being a P45 when in fact it's a P43 board which is a strict budget chipset not a mainstream chipset like the P45 is. To be honest I'm surprised he pushed his chip that far on a P43.

We know that. The OP was saying he doesn't think it's worth upgrading his p43 to board just to get another 400Mhz and perhaps no guarantee

Hence everybody's reponses saying that he is almost certain with a ep45 board to get at least that 400Mhz and more likely 600 to 900Mhz more.

Nice CPU :D

I've been hoping to snap one of those up if I see one at the right price (e.g. No more expensive than a M/B, RAM, i5).

I'm running an Asus P5Q-E P45 board, currently with a dual core and the FSB is upto 480MHz stable. Will go higher but need a better CPU heatsink before I do. I picked my M/B up for £60 back in Feb/March last year and have seen several close to this price on auction sites.

Got mine so cheap as it was a refurb from another e-tailer.

I'd love to see what that CPU could do on this board ;)

I have the same problem with my X48. CPU does 3.6Ghz on stock volts but the mobo is fsb limited. I am so tempted to get a P45 board, especially after seeing your results.

Slippery slope here on the rocky road of the upgrade path.

Changing X48 mobos to P45 for extra feww 100mhz is not cost effective and goes against upgrading on the same s775 platform in the first place.

Be happy with what you have.

If a new mobo is needed then ditch the ram chip and mobo and upgarde to i5 or i7

£125 for it, a couple of qid more than i wanted to pay but its supposed to last me atleast 2 years im hoping.
If t came to the crunch i reckon id scrape my money back if it worked out to expensive to attain decent clocks with it.
