Second beta release of CorsixTH

After three months of development since the previous release, we are proud to present CorsixTH beta 2. The aim of this release is to give a report of our progress and attract more players and (hopefully) contributors to the project. Since beta 1, a great number of new features and improvements were implemented (see changelog below). Generally, playability has been vastly improved by implementing more elements of the original game that were still missing in the previous release. Furthermore, we introduced a translation system and a new main menu, and are thus now looking for help in the following areas:

* Coding
* Artwork (main menu background and UI)
* Translations (new languages and completion of existing languages)

If you're willing to contribute in one of these areas, we gladly invite you to do so. Otherwise, just enjoy this release, and spread the word to your friends.

An original copy of Theme Hospital is required for this, as it uses some of the game files (artwork & sounds if I understand it correctly).

Was just about to post this but I see you beat me to it. If the OpenTTD project is anything to go by then this will become a big success.

There is an earlier project called OpenTH but in my opinion they took the wrong approach to it. Their aim was to recreate the game from scratch but they didn't have a good place to start.

What aspect of it is better than just playing the original, seeing as you need the original?

The original is only needed for the graphics, you can even use the demo version which is freely availiable, this is much the same situation as the OpenTTD project.

As for the benefits, some include:

  • Higher resolutions, it will run at pretty much any resolution you can think of.
  • Cross platform, it runs on pretty much any platform with a C++ compiler and can use either OpenGL, DirectX or SDL for the rendering.
  • Much better sound quality with support for MP3 music and sounds.
  • Fixes the numerous bugs in the original version.
  • More languages available.
  • New features can be added.
  • More levels, level editor, more difficulties (possibilities are endless).

Played through TH again quite recently, still is a lot of fun :)

How complete is this beta? What is still missing etc? I don't really want to try it if only half the game is implemented :l

OH MY GOD! THE MUSIC! THE MUSIC!

I'd forgotten just how good it was - great stuff! This is a classic game.

The major things it's missing is all of the levels and the ability to win. It's more of a 'look how much we have done' to try and get people to join the project and help out.

It's quite impressive as they don't have the source code from the original game, nor did they disassemble it (like OpenTTD did). Basically one guy wrote an engine in C++ that is capable of using the existing graphics and made use of LUA scripting to implement the logic.
