Michelin close to Formula 1 return

Would be nice to get that extra variable in the mix, though hopefully if there is tire competition it will be closer than the last war we had...

Can only be a good thing now we are on full tanks. Pushing the limits of tyre wear against speed. Can't wait. The trouble last time was Bridgestone built tyres for ferrari and sod everyone else.

I'd be happy with either a one-manufacturer or a many-manufacturer solution to tyres.

Just as [ling] long as there isn't a two-manufacturer solution.

I don't want to go back to the years of Bridgestone- or Michelin-friendly circuits, where you could dismiss a sizeable portion of the field on a given track simply because of their choice of boots.

Even a three-way tyre 'war' would be better than that.

F1 is just going round in circles , they ban fuelling in pitstops, they bring it back, they ban it...........

Now its happening with tyres. Bringing back multiple tyre manufacturers will just make for even worse racing, why would you want it back?

I would like to see each team responsible for finding its own tyres.

That way we could have say Ferrari on Birdgestone, McLaren on Michelin, RBR on Metzler, Mercedes on Continental, Torro Rosso on Pirrellis (same as metzler), Williams on Avons, Lotus on Vee Rubber or something equally crap.

There was only a choice of two before and one was heavily biased to Ferrari :D It would be good as mentioned above, to have many more involved to mix things up - some would be good on certain tracks, others not be etc.

If there is going to be multiple tyre suppliers then the contracts should reside with the FIA not the teams themselves. So that teams can choose whichever tyres they want on any given race weekend.

Otherwise it's just going to be a Schumi/Ferrari style situation again, for years on end. Which is not good for the sport.

As far as I see it, a fresh tyre war would only increase the performance gap between teams. This could only be a bad thing.

I agree, I don't really see the positives. Don't get me wrong I like to see fierce competition through development in F1, but cars never being able compete because of having different tyres is just boring.

That was the problem last time we had twin-tyre suppliers. Bridgestone supposedly tailored tyres to Ferraris needs (according to McLaren) so then we ended up with Jordan and Minardi on Bridgestone doing poorly and Ferrari at the front on their Bridgestones a second a lap faster than anyone.

A friend of mine at Mitch reckons they won't bother - too much expense for very little gain for them and another mate from Bridgestone told me that they are pulling out because as the sole tyre supplier they have no more reason to be there. Now that they can't develop the technologies that can move to the road and they can't show any competition what's the point.

Having said that, I still think if nobody else offers to supply Bridgestone would not doubt continue...

I think the problem that the suppliers have is the lack of competition and the lack of development. Also I suppose both Bridgestone and Michellin have also recoeved maximum media coverage from F1 untill a few years down the line when they may re enter (like Goodyear might ATM).
