Picked up a DSL and copy of HeartGold over the bankholiday.

enjoying so far, the early sprint shoes help things, and better 3d game engine from the updated DS games is nice too.

So anyway the story so far, i have picked myself a nice Totodile starter.

it took me over 2 full days of resetting to get myself one with half decent stats, id wanted an Adamant, or Jolly one with high speed and high ATT. it just wasnt to be!
i had to settle with something like a Naive 25/30/20/8/25/24. So yes my SpDef takes a hit, but its a relatively high base IV stat to begin with. the only adamant or jolly ones i found were scabby with low attack or speed stats.

made it to the first badge, caught myself a Bellsprout. caught about 8, 1 modest but with low Speed and not the best SpATT. but then i got neutral nature but with high average stats and a full 31 Mischevious SP ATTAck as my backup pokemon (with sleep and poison powder to act as my main catcher pokemon for wild encounters)

just made it down to the fishing place and got myself an Old Rod, see what i can catch (Magikarp perhaps...)

but i am at the point where i can now start trading with my older games. and i last year condensed my older FireRed/Emerald/Diamond/Pearl collection down.

So although i dont like all the pokemon im catching, i can trade them into pearl, breed them out and then transfer them back as the nature/IV i wanted.

or alternatively bring in all my faves as the breeded versions that i never actually got a chance to use properly,

So some Dratini or Bagon action with almost flawless stats (Salamence>u). plus i think i have some Uber Starmies/Porygons plus untold bulbasaurs etc to run with!

anyon else playing through? need help? want to trade? i have some great pokemon to trade:)

I picked this up recently as well and have been playing through it - up to the 3rd (I think... the one with the Miltank :o) gym so far. Never played this version when it was originally released and I'm enjoying it a lot so far.

I've never gotten in to/understood the stats side that you mentioned... as someone who is unlikely to ever play competitively is it worth the effort trying to breed a pokemon with specific stats? Have you got any links that explain the system as I understand the stats info in game is not particularly in depth (or rather cryptic in the way it's displayed).

I'm looking for a Japanese (or foreign) ditto at the moment as I hear using a foreign pokemon in breeding dramatically increases the chance of getting a shiny pokemon. :D

edit- biggest disapointment is that they have not taken advantage of the WPA support added in the DSi meaning I still have to set up a seperate WEP network whenever I want to go online...

hmm...yes i think Gold/Silver were the best versions tbh of the old school variety, the first with night/day and other features plus my possibly fave pokemon, Ho-oH!

ya basically, the gist is this:

Pokemon are BORN with 'IV' stats. Plus a nature. and a tell, such as 'Mischevious' or similar.

the idea is this. every pokemon has 'base' stats for HP, Attack, Def, etc.

so at a given level say (for instance) at level 70:

HP - 100
Attack - 120
Defence - 80
Spec. Att. - 90
Spec. Def. - 70
Speed - 90

- that is for a NEUTRAL based Nature.

Now say this exact pokemon had an ADAMANT nature, it gives +10 to attack and -10% to special attack.

so the same poke at lvl 70 with adamant would be:

ADAMANT:
HP - 100
Attack - 132 (base + 10%)
Defence - 80
Spec. Att. - 81 (base - 10%)
Spec. Def. - 70
Speed - 90

so you can see this nature suited the pokemon it helped to increase the best stat and reduce one of the least useful (presuming this 'mon has some good Physical Attacks). So getting the pokemon with the 'right' nature is important, it gives you 10% boost.

BUT each of those base stats are only theoretical and are based upon an assumption of 31 out of 31 IV stats.

When a pokemon gets 'born' it gets a random spread of numbers out of 31 for HP, Attack, speed etc

these numbers are v random, you can get a 'mon with 0 HP and 31 attack. These numbers constitute the 'base' maximum.

SOO....

going back to example above, if your pokemon had IV's of

0 HP, 31 Attack, 20 defence, 10 Spatt, 10 spdef, 31 speed

Then it would come out like;

ADAMANT:
HP - 69 (100 - 31)
Attack - 132 (base + 10%)
Defence - 69 (80-11)
Spec. Att. - 60 (base - 10%) (81-21)
Spec. Def. - 49 (70-21)
Speed - 90

SO obviously to make a good pokemon you want each IV to be 31 out of a possble 31 otherwise you are weakened in an area or multiple areas.

there are IV checkers out on the web, so when i catch or get a pokemon i can input its level and stats and it tells me the approximate IV's so i can see if they are good or bad and keep it, or look for another.

the chances of getting the Optimal Natured pokemon with an optimal IV spread is low.

im talking about getting 7 variables to line up or even 6 is very tough, as the first variable has about 15 outcomes and then the rest of the other 6 variables are out of 31....

then there are EV's

I spent most of yesterday trading stuff over with a mate from my old game.
Im just past the 3rd Gym, and i just replaced my entire team that i'd built up with good'ens from my other game.
So my team atm consists of:

Ivysaur (Grass/Poison)
Wartortle (Water)
Charmelion (Fire, then Fire/Flying when leveled)
Bronzor (Steel/Psychic)
Piggioto (Flying)
Riolu (Fighting, then Fighting/Steel when leveled)

Reasonably well balanced i think.

I kept all my other Pokèmon on my diamond game, apart from Tyranitar, as it took me ages to train and even at level 65, gives my mate with his team of 80+ (and a few 95+) Pokèmon's a real hard time. :D
So im planning on dropping Piggioto when Charmelion levels to Charizard, as then i'd have a dual spec fire/flying Pokèmon, so Tyranitar should drop in quite nicely i think. :D
Cant wait to get the 'Exp Share' item in this game. I traded the other across with some other gubbins with the rest of the Pokèmon, so with two of them, can train three Pokèmon at the same time! :D

Cant quite work out the Pokèwalker though. Ace idea. But im wondering what happens if the battery goes on it, or you lose it, do i then lose whatever Pokèmon i transfered to it? Not keen on that tbh.:(

no u can get back your pokewalker pokemon if you lose it!

BoomAM you mght as well have just created a team with lots of ubers in there hehe.

levelling up is easy, EV training is a bit more time consuming but you can guarantee stat growth. Do you go for nature, or do you just use any nature pokemon?

i only worked out all the nature/IV stuff last time out. all my older Sapphire etc pokemon are all broken with like a docile Kyogre for example with really bad attack and speed stats.

edit:

oh yea i dont think i have EVER caught a wild SHINY pokemon. ever. and ive played Blue. Yellow, Gold, Sapphire, pearl and now HG. the only shiny i have are eother traded or stolen from Emerald. but with mainly bad nature and stats.

I can remember playing Gold/Silver for hours on end a few years ago. Fantastic games!

SO then.

we have 5 players in here.

Who would be up for some Wi-Fi battling or trading?

i have lots of great pokemons to trade/breed all 100% legit no hacks.

Can or cant?
Is there any documentation on that particular subject anywhere?

BoomAM you mght as well have just created a team with lots of ubers in there hehe.
Lol, maybe.
All of them are 20-23 at the moment, leveling nicely.
Although as good as Bronzor is at times, i dont like his evolved form. :(
And im still not happy about the balancing of the team, any tips for alternatives?

BoomAM, there's a combination of buttons you can press if for some reason your pokewalker died so you can never loose the pokemon in there. See here.

That IV stats info was an interesting read... maybe too much effort for me though. :D

I'm am up for some trading, have some starters if anyone would like one... Bulbasaur, Mudkip, Cyndaquil, Chimchar and Piplup. Should also have some Magmar's which are useful for hatching eggs quicker. Just shout. :)

booted my Pearl game last night, i have over 210 hours on there!!?!! and about 200 of that is breeding. and i never actually breeded out the pokemon with the nature/stats i wanted!

i do however have some very good Bagons (not perfect but good none the less) to trade.

Look up Salamence (google it to see how cool it is: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=e...ta=&aq=f&aqi=g3g-s1g1g-s1g4&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=) very difficult to find.

i also have one of the best Lugias ive ever seen (good IV spread, all around 20-25).

id take a decent male Cyndaquil if you have?

Oooo iv been meaning to see if anyone else has got these yet?? Me and my flatmate got SS and HG on release as we've been waiting for it for months! (I got a special trip to the massive tescos to get SS and ask random staff if they had it out back and everything).

Got to say its better than i remember gold and silver, lots of subtle changes in presentation that are awesome! I also forgot how annoying the 3rd gym was with the stupid milktank (with the move milkdrink that could force me to throw my ds out the window till i cursed it!!!)

Has anyone else found the pokewalker to be the most random addition ever? I take my geodude for walks and always come back with random pokemon that like to follow me as well (i have several oddish's)

I cant wait to get back to Kanto to get the original starting pokemon too, makes the second half of the game way more fun :D

aww man all this pokemon talk makes me want to get it again :(

So much time has been put into these games in the past :p I never really got into Diamond... But Silver/Gold has to be my fav of the series so far.

Awww dammit TO gamestation or tesco after work !!! ;)

I got pokemon soulsilver the other week I'm not to hot on it but wouldn't mind trading with you guys if I get anything worth while I don't play it often have just got to goldenrod city. I wanna beat Red once again! I remember all those years ago he was quite hard. Does kanto look good?

doh my pokewalker is a bit dodgey sometimes it doesnt work i have to tap it on something to make anything appear on the screen!

already racked up some free potions and things though.

got some definate trades ported to my HG game now:

Bagon (male) 'ZZ3' Lvel 19
ADAMANT

28/30/20/x/25/31

Dragon Dance already learned

Lugia lvl 70
Modest
IVs: 20-25 ACROSS THE BOARD! this doesnt have any 'perfect' ivs, but there are very very few as well statted Lugias out there anywhere imo.

in addition i have a lot of charmanders of varying ability/nature

a few Feebass (evolves into Milotic)

plus quite a few Dratini's, which evolve into a Dragonair

if anyone particular wants one of the above let me know and let me know what you have to trade, ta

Well, I just beat the upgraded Elite 4, that was fun :) Still got to beat Red, but need to level a bit first. Currently got..

Typhlosion - Lvl 65
Lapras - Lvl 61
Zapdos - Lvl 61
Gyarados - Lvl 61
Golem - Lvl 60
Pidgeot - Lvl 60

I know Pidgeot isn't the best flying, but i've always used him through out all the games, so didn't fancy changing it. Caught all the legendary runners (Raikou/Entei/Suicune/Latias) so just need to get Ho-Oh and Lugia before doing the random event stuff.

@nick - I'm glad i'm not the only one who spent hours breeding on Diamond/Pearl. Tried for ages to get a shiny Eevee to get a shiny Umbreon as they look awesome, but no luck, all boxes filled with them :(

Creature, you dont know how many bagons and dratinis i have produced. i cant describe how many i have created that were a failure.

thing is, now in this new pokemon breeding is EASIER! by equiping the right item, you can defnately pass 1 characteristic on from a pokeparent...

wheras before it was a random 3 from 14, now you can lock one on and ensure it gets ported over. this makes it much easier but im nowhere near the breeding area in HG yet... not even got my 2nd gym badge!

Caught all the legendary runners (Raikou/Entei/Suicune/Latias)

ya i have these all really bad stats and natures though, thry were caught before i understood natures properly.

If u have anything interesting, i can do you a Lugia with great IVs:)

also like u have found, breeding a shiny, just no chance. i filled the PC boxes with bagons and then dratinis and not one shiny. the only ones i have (electrabuzz, porygon) were traded.. and one i managed to 'steal' out of the battle tower in Emerald by using a cheat to warp out of the space with the pokemon in my team or something (which you werent meant to be able to do)...

oh yea i might have some Staryus with Icebeam too in various levels and natures if anyone interested?!
