The game - unsurprisingly given the monetization potential that online always offers - offers multiplayer. It also offers licensed vehicles, a bit of plot and a mode called Shift in which enables you to unlock other vehicles and drive them... without leaving your vehicle. This comes about to our hero Tanner via what can only be described as an Ashes to Ashes (the TV show) moment in the game.

Driver 5 Interview - E3 2010

Hmm...I liked Driver and Driver 2 (ish), not sure about this shifting business. What do you guys think?

shifting seems stupid is it because you cant get out of your car in the game like the original drivers? get with the times its like fps not having "jump"

Loved the original, made my trusty Microsoft wheel smoke a few times :D

Everything else since hasn't been a patch on the original though so very little hope for this.

The original was one of the best all-time games for me. I spent SO many hours playing it.

If I remember correctly, Martin Edmondson (in the vid) was part of Reflections Interactive who made the first game, but if he was also responsible for some of the terrible sequels I don't have much hope for this one. The shift feature seems lazy if anything, and makes no sense.

All of the Driver sequels lacked the gritty charm and pure gameplay of the first. Judging by the gameplay video this seems like another starsky and hutch esque farce of an arcade game so I'll remain deeply disappointed. I still play the original on my netbook from time to time, says a lot.

Turned the video off as soon as that shifting cobblers started. What a ridiculous idea

Was just watching a video and he introduced this shift feature. Shut the video off at that point.

What were the developers thinking... can imagine them sat in a room all thinking of ideas... "What if we had Tanner.... asleep.. no, in a coma and he's dreaming....."

**** off.

Driver 1 and Driver 2 were awesome, hated all the others.

Agree that this shifting thing is rubbish, wish it would go back to what it was like in driver 1.

That Shift thing is a bit weird. I can see why it will be disliked, but on the other hand I think it could be fun. Gives you non stop driving fun without all the hassle of moving between cars and stuff that was boring in driver 2 :p
If the car handling is fun I'll probs buy it, loved the older games despite them getting progressively worse! :p

You could in the later Driver games but they always seemed like a poor imitation of GTA. This "shifting" seems like a ridiculous idea though. Surely it would just be easier (and better for the gamers) to code the free roam properly.

Everyone seems to be knocking this shift feature before we've tried it. Ok, I understand it's really different and yer it could be rubbish, but let's remember the free roaming bit of Driver 3 was terrible. I remember everyone slaming the rewind feature in GRID when it first came out as it made the game too easy. This one offers some interesting options. It's a day one purchase for me (and as a big Driver fan I'm getting the special edition with the shiny model car!)

Haven't played since Driver 2 which I can't really remember, but know I absolutely loved the original. Eh, I'll have to wait and see.

From what I've seen the game looks poor, however even if it looked good the shifting from car to car feature would put me off. I haven't seen one person comment that they liked it on youtube or GT. I have no idea why they included it other than the fact it's a gimmick which they hope, will help it to sell - I think it will do the opposite. It doesn't even make sense, do you have magic powers? no. Are you in some sort of matrix reality? no? then why the hell is it in the game? Is there a reason for it that I'm missing?

Unfortunate as the original Driver is a game I remember most fondly.
