A thought struck me earlier today. We have a really good stickied thread with loads of information about Photography, but we don't seem to have one for links to useful photographic software (correct me if I'm wrong).

There are lots of programs out there, obviously some are commercial software such as Photoshop, Lightwave, Aperture and Paint Shop Pro, but what about the freely available programs.

I'll start with a few

Microsoft Image Composite Editor - brilliant panoramic stitcher from Microsoft Research

Deep Sky Stacker - stacks Astonomy shots together

Hugin - another excellent panoramic stitcher

No correction needed, it's a fine point. I'm looking to re-work the sticky in the coming weeks, so I'll make a note of the thread :)

VSO image resizer - batch or single image resizing, watermarks, some editing. Attaches itself to WIndows for seamless manipulation

Autostitch - great stitching software. Doesn't need installation either.

I have always used the default Windows Photo Viewer to view (as thumbnail and in full, incl. raw/nef files) all my photos, whether snaps or better ones. However it's really starting to bug me that they make photos look rubbish and misleading, especially as when I open them in Gimp, they look fine (sharper, no artefacts, colours accurate, etc).

What's a better alternative just for just opening and viewing (not cataloguing) that is as convenient as the WIndows one - Irfanview?
