Hey,

Bought an i7 950 & a Rampage iii Gene yesterday form OCUK, just need to get GPU sorted now. Cant make my mind up over the two.

Gigabyte GTX 460 1GB @ £178 + P&P OCUK

or

Asus GTX 470 V2 @ £200

What would you suggest taking into consideration case will not be well ventilated.

PSU should be fine, either hx1000w or a 850w. It should really be a know brainer in favour of the GTX 470 for only £20 extra plus Mafia II free, but from reading reviews it seems the GTX 460 comes very close to the 470 whilst consuming a lot less power and producing a lot less heat.

Furthermore ive read the 460 can be clocked to 900+ which would make it considerable faster than the 470...

The 470 is also highly overclockable though, so comparing a highly clocked 460 to a stock 470 is not a valid comparison.

The point about power consumption is very true, although I would not agree with the performance comment. The 470 really does have a lot more grunt, particularly as you increase the resolution and add in more AA.

As far as the PSU goes, fantastic though the HX1000 is, it strikes me as slight overkill for the system you are planning. An 850 would give you enough headroom to add another 470 at a later date. That said, if money is not a concern, having more power headroom is never a bad thing. Also consider the new AX series from corsair. Their power efficiency is superb...

BTW I own neither a 460 nor 470, so no inherent bias here :p I am a fan of corsair PSUs though :)

lol 850watt? unless your planning on going sli at some point then 600 is more than enough.

i'd go with a 460 if your not going to have much case ventilation.

i assume your planning on a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 OC 1024MB @ £178 mine never goes above 62c at 100% load and the fan is very quiet you probably wont even be able to hear it

you can almost garuntee overclocking it from 715 > 800mhz probably with no voltage adjustment to get that far.

i'd imagine you wouldnt be to far of the performance of a 470 and a lot coolor

also make sure you get an AX PSU as they have a better efficiency

There a bit too expensive to be honest. Im looking at a 3 month old HX1000w which has all ready been modded with full MDPC-X sleeving that will match my build @ £125

This project is all ready at £1100 which is making me sweat so trying to save a few pennies!!

Buy this instead for £164.99 and flash it into a 470. There is a thread developing on the Pov 465GTX which shows its actually a 470 in disguise. I'm tempted but I have a 5850 Toxic and I don't think there would be much difference in performance.

that sounds too good to be true. just a couple of questions. if unlocked will it be as fast as the 470 and will the less ram make a difference? real good find mate cheers

Unless you are thinking of buying the 470 from somewhere else at that price I'm seeing the 470 @ £224.99.

The above making it over £40 more expensive than the 460. Is the 470 worth £40 more than the 460...?

Will a 470 run ok with a Corsair TX 650W + Q9550 at 3500Mhz + 3 HDD's?

I am also still stuck what to buy - 470 as they are at a great price point now and great performance, but put out a bit of heat and is a large card. Or a 460 which is not has fast but still great performance, less heat/power and a smaller footprint.

Does the 460 underclock in 2D mode?
