I was thinking of this today while playing a number of adventure games and i thought to myself why don't we have a recommended list. We talk about the best rpg's but no adventure.

So i'll start the list, join in if you wish ;)

Black Mirror

Black Mirror 2

The Dig

Syberia

Legend of Kyrandia

Monkey Island Series

Sam and Max

I did miss out on the golden age of Adventure games.

Are a lot of these on abandonia or still have to purchase them?

You can get a few on Steam, there's a Lucasarts four pack for the two Indy games, Loom and the Dig. The first two Monkey Island games also have remakes on Steam. Broken Sword 2 and 3 are on Steam, but not 1 unfortunately. :(

Beneath a Steel Sky you can get free here. :)

Machinarium and the Telltale games are pretty new and available on Steam, same with Ben there, Dan that. Machinarium was in the Humble Indie bundle recently too.

Can't help you with many of the others, I've still got my retail copies for the ones I play. :(

I'll try out Beneath a Steel Sky, thanks. :)

I've heard of the newer Adventure titles such as Machinarium but it's the 90s ones I know little about. Only monkey island and Broken Sword I recognise really.

Sadly replaying these games today just doesn't feel 'right' when you get around to it. A great list of true classics there. I've never played Broken Sword before but know it's classic status. I have the first one on my iPad, which I'll get around to playing at some point as it was free during Christmas.

Annoyingly enough I never did get around to completing The DiG despite being fascinated by the very premise of it during its release. I never did work out what the main story was about :(

Westwoods Blade Runner comes to mind as another classic.

Enjoyed quite a few of the games posted above, here's a few others I also rate.

Not sure if Heavy Rain counts as it's a console exclusive but still a great adventure game imo,I bought a PS3 purely to play this game!

Some excellent games you've listed(as usual) Neil :)

I did notice one glaring omission however!

The Gabriel Knight series!

I'll think on this more, for now I'll compile a little list in a different format (my opinion only):

1) Most underrated adventure ever
- Sanitarium
2) Most overrated adventure game ever
- Sam and Max (closely followed by The Grim Fandango)
3) The best adventure game ever
- Gabriel Knight 1 - Sins of the fathers

I'll add some more adventure games that are worth a look imo later.

i used to play adventure games allot durin the 1990s,i did finish grey matter recently, story and gfx were quite good, though the terrible animation ruined it a bit, if that game had a higher budget it could have been a worthy successor to gabriel knight

Some more! ( i'm only posting the greats )

Darkseed

Stargate Adventure

BlackWell Legacy

Quest for glory Series + Remakes

A Tale of Two Kingdoms

That is the series I had never heard of somehow, but will most defo check it out.

You've certainly introduced me to some classic gaming the past couple of months or so!

You should, when i first played black mirror i didn't think it would be much but it blew me away in graphical style and the dark storyline. So far black mirror 2 seems to be less so but it's still damn good and i'm early in the game. Already hints of black mirror's locations showing up :D

Here's a small selection of great games I've played :) These are all brilliant games with good review scores in the adventure community.

The previous game to Overclocked.

By Benoît Sokal, the guy that made Syberia 1 and 2. Btw, Syberia 3 is supposedly expected this year. There's been much demand for it.

Frogwares. You must play sherlock jack the ripper, it's really chilling, with great dialogue, and nice puzzles and sleuthing.

Kheops Studios: They've made some fantastic games, some quite hard, Dracula path of the dragon being extremely hard most of the time. I do like the first person point and clicks though, possibly more than 3rd person. You must play Voyage, it's excellent.

Never liked the sherlock games for some reason :(

p.s ALL adventure games should have skippable puzzles like black mirror, puzzles just get on my nerves and take away the fun. Also i suck at them lol
