I have my Intel Core i5 2500K 3.30GHz @ 4.60GHz DDR3 which is due today

I have been told by OC tech if i add another 4GB i will loose my clock on machine , which is better getting another 4GB or keeping the clock speed ?

Thanks :D

Memory in machine > Corsair Vengeance 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit

Well I assume that because you have gotten an i5, you will be gaming and not hardcore video encoding, editing etc? Then 4GB is fine, keep your clock. Although getting to 4.6ghz isn't hard with SB.

Can't you just make a note of the overclock settings now? You'll probably need to up some voltages with more ram tho.

Won't be the same, 4sticks of ram can cause inconsistency and a lot of trial and error. Will effect overclocking, so making a note won't work.

Just gaming & small amount of photoshop CS5 & Photoshop Elements 9

You know there's quite a good chance you'll be able to hit 4.6 again with the added RAM. Filling in the DIMMs won't kill your overclocking. It will just give it a bump.

You should be able to easily hit 4.3 at the every least.

Hi TallGuy,

Long and the short is that having 4 sticks of RAM rather than 2 puts extra strain on the memory controller and CAN mean that your overclock wouldn't work at your CURRENT settings. However you might be lucky and it might just work, or just require a tweak on your RAM voltages to fix....

From what I gather on Sandybridge your overclock is fairly safe anyway (some people are getting much higher), so it might just work. Worse case scenario is that you might have to lower your overclock a little.

More RAM in Photoshop CS5 really helps especially if you have lots of images open or just plain large stuff, more than 4 Gb RAM in gaming probably doesn't make much odds on current games, but who know what the next year or two will bring....
