In 2001 i went on my honeymoon to Gran Canaria and on the flight back i thought i was going to die and I've never flown since.

Just as the plane was taxiing the Captain came onto the mic and told us all to put on our seat belts. 3 minutes later we flew into the thunderstorm. The engines kept revving up and then dying then revving up again. We were sitting 3/4's up on the plane but the people sitting at the front were going above and below us. A stewardess trolley shot down the aisle by itself due to the momentum. The worst thing was looking out onto the wing of the aircraft and all i could see was flashes of lightning hitting it. People on the plane were screaming. Add to that the plane was shaking really really bad. Sounds daft , but my feet and legs went cold and clammy and i really thought i was going to die.

Since that flight all our holidays have since involved me driving to France or Holland.

My problem is that the missus wants to go somewhere hot next year which will involve flying.

Look at the statistics of plane deaths vs car deaths. Or plane deaths vs being struck by lightning or bee stings.
Modern aircraft are so well built and designed to withstand all sorts of conditions. I find the more I fly the less I enjoy it. I went through a phase last year when I was in the air every 8 weeks and I ended up dreading it. Im now taking 6 flights a month and I still dont enjoy it, but its become more tolerable.

Dosen't help the nerves. Never used to dislike flights til I realised one day that mine and everyone's lives are at the complete whim of a guy at the front. A guy who is subject to all the ailments of life.

Makes me distinctly nervous.

Well you were on a plane that was struck by lightning and you didn't die, if that doesn't instil confidence in the technology (which is frankly amazing, how far we've come - people often forget that) and skill of the engineers, pilots and countless other staff then i don't know what will.

My rational thinking is that 1000's of pilots and stewardesses go to work evry day and nothing happens . But my last flight was very very scary and i can't forget it.

What you say is very true but i just need to get my head around it ....

Start swimming now. :)

You could go by boat.

I don't like flying much either, i used to be fine with flying but also had a bad experience on a long haul flight back from LA and ever since i'm not keen, we had bad turbulence for 4 hours, the pilot did apologise but it doesn't help, i still fly though.

the only way to deal with it is get on a plane. you could speak to your gp to get something to calm you down a bit, but the realitiy is if you wanna fly you are just going to have to man the **** up :p

Go to the docs. He should be able to give you some fairly strongish tranqs you can take just after you board (sat on the runway or taxiing) and you won't remember any of the flight 'cause you'll be so out of it.

Why doesn't your wife care about the dodgy flight?

Crikey, what do you do for a living?

A friend of mine survived the 2007 Phuket crash. He had to get on a plane to fly home once they released him from hospital.

I, on the other hand, wouldn't get on a plane unless I was sedated, in a box and stored in cargo.

the consensus here is just book the holiday and once i'm on the plane there's nothing i can do about it .......

Do what I do, just tell her no. I'll never fly again, ever. I'm not interested in fixing the fobia. Flying will never happen and we work round it.

Since when does hot = flying?

You can get to almost any country in Eurasia and Africa by train and anywhere by ship.

Why not enjoy a luxury 7 day cruise to the USA for example?

Look at the statistics of plane deaths vs car deaths.

Deaths per billion passenger-journeys

Bus: 4.3
Rail: 20
Van: 20
Car: 40
Foot: 40
Water: 90
Air: 117

I hate flying, it's morbid.

I hate when the seat belt sign comes on for no reason and the flight attendants get a look on their face like they know something you don't, and they glance at each other as if to say **** just got real. WHAT DO THEY KNOW?? ARE WE GONNA DIE?

The likelihood is that you are more likely to die in a car crash than a plane crash.
