Yes, you read that right. I have a kingston V100 in my system at the moment but i went and bought a 256GB M4 to replace it with, i will then put the SATAII V100 in my MBP to give that a lovely little speed boost.

My question is, when i replace my v100 in my pc, will i need to do a fresh install and re download all steam games and such? Will be a bit of a pain to do that... OR is there a faster, better way? i have read that you need a fresh install to get windows to use TRIM properly on the SSD but since i already have an SSD and am just replacing it, i could just clone the drive?

For my Mac im just going to make a Lion USB and then backup through time machine, easy peasy.

Thanks in advance.

Make a Steam backup on the V100. Unplug the drive, plug in and install Windows on the new one. Then plug the old one back in and restore the Steam backup.

Steam backup looks like a good option. Then i will prob just make a list of all other smaller programs and re download.

Going through the switch over now, should i be making a full system image and then installing windows on the new drive? From there i can restore the image to the new drive and all should be the same as before right?

All you need to do is copy the steam folder across from one drive too the other drive and then reinstall steam ;)

You will still need to click on each game in steam to restall them, but you will not need to download them again..

All you need to do is copy C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps then repaste it on the new install. Then open up Steam and it will detect all the games and once it verifies everything they're all ready to play.

I tried this but it just crashed every time i opened it.

tbh im not too bothered. i have disks for all 5 of my games lol :D

One thing i would like to know... How easy is it to split steam games up and keep their data on differnet hard drives? Although i have a 256GB SSD, i still think it would be best if i try not to fill it with data.

You can install steam to a different hard drive or location. For example your old SSD and it runs from there.

How do I install games on a different hard drive or location?

Uninstalling Steam

(You can also move your Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos to your old SSD and change the Properties for Library locations.)

Old SSD is going in my MacBook Pro, but what i was really asking is if i can split the steam apps folder essentially. So i keen the games i play atm like skyrim and rage on my SSD then the ones i use rarely on 3TB Storage Drive.
