Hi guys just recieved my new pre-built from OC's, i have a 60SSD drive as my main boot drive which is working fine, and is visible if i click start and go my computer. However i cant seem to locate the other 500G hardrive that is installed. Any pointers or suggestions?

Just checked FAQ's and can see it in device manager...trying to work out how to format and create a partition for it.....urgh

right click on 'my computer' (just called 'computer' on windows 7 / vista) and select 'manage' to open the computer management console. In the left hand column select 'disk management' (under storage). All your installed disks should be listed under here and you can also format and partition them by right clicking and selecting the appropriate option.

If you want a third party tool then EASEUS partition manager Home Edition comes highly recommended by me and is a free download from http://www.partition-tool.com/download.htm

Hi there,

Go into the Control Panel, then "System and Security", then "Administrative Tools" - go into "Computer management".

Then on the left side look for "Storage" and click on "Disk Management".

Then in the main part of the screen and look for the missing disk. Make sure it is initialised and formatted.

Ok im stuck, if i go to device manager i see ST500DM002-1BD142 ATA Device. If click properties and go onto the volumes tab its blank nothing is populated. I have the populate button. Should i populate it and is that what i need to do to get visibility of it?

Paragon Hard Disk Manager is another good one though it isn't free :(

Stoner81.

It is if you subscribe to PC Pro magazine :D got it free a couple of issues ago

Edit: still prefer EASEUS though... personal choice I guess, I just find the interface so friendly

Have you tried the above 'disk management' suggestions yet? Also another option I forgot to mention is diskpart. If you open a command prompt and type diskpart then it will load the diskpart program. From there you can perform almost any reasonable operation on any installed volume or disk. It is all command line based though unfortunately, no UI. There are plenty of guides around online if you are interested :)

Right click on the drive/partition lists down the bottom, you'll get the options you need

Something like..

initialise, then format

OK in my volume list is the C: drive which is my SSD. My CD ROM drive. and a system reserved drive which is broken into two bits a 100MB reserved partition and a 465.66GB available partition. Should i right click the reserved drive and press format?

When i right click i can the only options available that arent greyed out are New simple volume, properties and help

Create New Simple volume would be a good start ;). dont worry about getting it wrong or formatting in the wrong way, you can always delete any new volumes or partitions that you make and there is no data on the disk at the moment so you don't need to worry, you can't break it. The best way to learn is by doing! (the second best way is to ask at ocuk lol :P)

Cheers mate that worked a treat, i now have a new 466GB drive in my computer;) still wondering why it isnt the full 500GB though.

The very short answer is that some space is lost after partitioning. There are longer and better answers about if you google around. All you need to know is that this is completely normal :)

It's not lost after formatting

It's just the /1024/1024/1024, x1000000000 rule

I know that is not technically correct. I didn't mean to be misinformative, I just find it easier to explain to people like that instead of going in to the maths and the differences between our base 10 and computers' base 2 number systems. I guess I probably shouldnt have said lost... as much as I should have said the rest of that space was never really there in the first place... perhaps I should revise my explanation lol. Thanks for the extra info though :)
