Ive just sat down and eaten my dinner watching Top Gun (bear with me here), it has to be one of my all time fav movies.

Ahhhh, the intro, the music, just pure movie genius.

Now Im really in the mood for some Jet Figher PC action, I want to basically play Top Gun on my rig.

Im not a 'flight sim' fan at all, so Im not looking for realism and complex controls that you get from a 'true' simulator. Im looking for simple, fun, dog fighting jet fighter action. Shoot missles at things and bomb targets etc... I dont want it to be totally arcadey so I dont mind some 'realism' features. What do peeps recommend?

What game would people recommend that fits these points:

* Modern Jet Fighters (no WW2 stuff)
* Good graphics
* Controller (not joystick) compatible
* Has features like different camera angles, missle camera angles, you know, all the funky cool stuff

Been looking at these:

HAWX 1 and 2
DCS-A10C Warthog
Lock On, Flaming Cliffs 2

Please dont say BF3 ;)

LockOn Flaming Cliffs 2 on easiest settings fits the bill perfectly - just point your plane at the target , lock and fire. It has the best graphics of all such games imo. Should be playable with a joypad, with the only catch that configuring that joypad may take a bit of effort.

HAWX has completely unbelievable flight modelling and overall gameplay, but some like it that way apparently.

you may also have a look at THird Wire "Wings over... (Israel, Vietnam, Europe, etc)"- they are sort of in-between LOFC2 and HAWX, but slightly weak in gfx.

Oh, and if you have a web cam, you should also download FaceTrackNoIR program- it will track you head turning and you will get complete immersion like you're sitting in a cockpit- you can turn your real head a few degrees and your virtual head will look over its shoulder or under the wing etc

Yer someone else linking falcon 4! However, it is not arcade-like at all and neither is A-10. If you want that kind of gameplay you need to be in the console section really with Ace Combat. I would say a good flight sim like Falcon 4 will make you feel more Top Gun once mastered.

I bought a used copy of Falcon 4.0 last week so I could get the BMS mod, never paid so much for an old game in my life! Looks like the only copies out there are getting snapped up by collectors. At least now I can waste my adult life on it aswell as my childhood :)

Falcon 4.0 dynamic campaign is still the best. I really miss the days when you had those massive cardboard boxes and manuals the size of Lithuania and retail shops actually sold this stuff. And devs actually made this stuff.

Falcon 4 really does not belong to this thread :p

On a scale from Arcade silly to Sim brain box it would go like this:

Afterburner>>HAWX2>>>>>Wings Over Israel>>Lock On:Flaming Cliffs2>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>DCS A-10/Falcon4 :)

My personal favorite was the belkan war (ace combat) on ps2, don't know any PC ones.

Not really seen one come close to that after, they all try to be too realistic instead of fun.

HAWX2 looks tremendous in DX11 especially the landscapes but the gameplay is seriously lacking & the game design is pure arcade but its not very well made there are a lot of gameplay mission issues with pixel perfect collision & failure means back to the mission start just like the 1980's all over again :rolleyes:

Flaming Cliffs 2 (and no, you dont need to manage right engine auxiliary pressure booster pumps or such boring things in this game ;) ):

Well I found what I was looking for....not on the PC lol, Ace Combat: Assault Horizon on the Xbox 360 was exactly what I wanted. It blows Hawx out the water, I tried Hawx, but my god, I was falling asleep its so boring. Id recommend anyone looking for a good, fun, dog fighting, cinematic camera angles, lots of explosions, slow-mo bits etc, get Ace Combat:AH. Its really good. Plus, if youre a geek like me, you can play the Top Gun soundtrack album whilst playing.

I might give Flaming Cliffs 2 a go though, those screenies look nice!

I like Ace Combat on the PS3, but dont know if it's on PC. Feels like how a modern day Afterburner would be

Unfortunately neither Ace Combat 6 or AC:Assault Horizon are on PC. Only AC6 is on the XB360 and AC:AH is on both PS3 and 360. I hope they make a sequel to Assault Horizon as its so good and next time they release it on PC too.

Yeah, in terms of movie like wow-factor Ace Combat is unbeatable for pure arcade fighting game. But its not available on PC:(

BUT, PC does have Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 2 which is hands down the finest jet fighter game available now on ANY platform (I mean GAME, not sim;) ) so we shouldn't feel too depressed:) Tons of suspense, tons of action, beautiful flight graphics/dynamics - its got the lot:)
