Information I'm finding via google is rather vague on the matter as to whether the cable you use for an ssd actually makes any difference. I'm going to be using this SSD (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-162-SA&groupid=701&catid=2104&subcat=2394) which is fortunatley Sata-II backwards compatible as that's all my current system supports, what I'm wondering is, is there any disadvantage (other than the "clips at the end of the cables" that I've read about on more modern cables) to using one that came with my mobo like 4 years ago? Just the only spare one I have laying around so curious if I should be ordering a new cable with the SSD :)

for me i'd get a later one, as prices for all 3 are so cheap, might as well have the fastest, just try the one you have and see the results first, speed wise etc, data transfer, or errors given

I bet you see no difference in speed with a SATAII or SATAIII cable. SATAI I'm not sure about, but i mean it should say on the cable in white text somewhere.

Of course is the cable is old it might have corroded or something but that is unlikely.

As far as i know, all the connections are the same. Since all the connections are the same, all the cables are the same. Since all that is in a cable is some metal wire, you wont see any difference between them other than the quality of the cable but this is down to manufacturer of the cable rather than the revision.

This. It just depends on the quality of the cable, but usually even SATA I cables will do III speeds just fine.

Its the same situation as HDMI cables.
It's all just marketing.

Actually there are different types of HDMI cable. Standard, automotive, and high speed; as well as standard w/ethernet, and high speed w/ethernet. Also performance specifications for these categories have changed from version to version.
