Yay - go me. I've not had an alcoholic drink for two weeks now.

"So what?" you may well ask - well I've had an alcohol problem for certainly the last 20 odd years. I've stopped a few times before but either money for relationship problems caused me to start again.

We are expecting our second child (a boy!) in the new year and it's really made me want to sort it out - so here we are. Drinking 25 odd units a day was really taking it's toll.

Feeling really confident this time - so far so good. Had a few temper issues for the first week, but it's all getting better now. Drinking loads of squash and water, but not really hungry. Trying to relearn sleeping. All I used to do was black out, I'm now having to actually go to sleep. If you've not been there I guess that doesn't make sense!

No real point to this thread other than a bit of self praise :)

By the sounds of it this is a good accomplishment for you, well done! Just keep your head down and remember why you're doing it. :)

GOOD! You have no idea how happy I am for you, I know firsthand just how bad alcoholism is and IMO it's the worst drug of them all, keep it up and next time you think about having a drink - just remember why you quit. Long road ahead of you, but keep your focus and you'll do well :)

Well done mate. It gets better, then it gets worse, then it gets different, then it gets real! At the hardest points I found breaking it down into manageable chunks got me through the worst of the early days. Eg "I'll just walk past these pubs to get the train without a drink" and then "I'll just walk home without a drink" "I'll just go to bed without a drink". What helped most was talking to other people who had been through the same issue. I never understood a) that the way I drank wasn't normal (what, other people don't finish abandoned pints at closing time?) and that b) you don't have to be on a park bench to have a problem.

To whatever extent it has affected your life, you're welcome to drop me a message if you want to chat.

Drinking 25 odd units a day was really taking it's toll.

The government advises that people should not regularly drink more than 3-4 units of alcohol a day for men (equivalent to a pint and a half of 4% beer) and 2-3 units for women (equivalent to a 175 ml glass of wine). 'Regularly' means drinking alcohol every day or most days of the week.

you should be dead surely?

That's actually pretty amazing, I don't think people really appreciate the grip that addiction has.
Your wife must be so relieved :)

Someone I work for drinks a lot, she's a dead person waiting to die, everyone around her suffers for her addiction.

Thank you for the kind words - they really help.

I've also recently had two episodes of Atrial Fibrillation with Rapid Ventricular Response - basically my heart started to go into arrhythmia and my pulse was over 200 bpm. These episodes were caused directly by the quantity of alcohol I was drinking :/

It's another reason I've decided to knock it on the head.

We even went out to a mate's wedding reception last night and all I had was a couple of cokes.

Thanks again for the support :)

Sounds like your friends are really supportive. I found it hard when I stopped drinking because I had surrounded myself with people who drank like me, so you have a head start already.

Try to make sure you've got something else you can do to should you find yourself stressed, depressed or what have you, I suspect that's the biggest risk.

Good luck. :)

second child?
should have quit for the first one. Who wants an alcoholic for a dad?
well done for stopping though. Do it for the kids.

Well done :)

214 days ago today I admitted to myself, properly, that I was what is apparently called a functional alcoholic, and packed it in. I also admitted it to my closest friends.

I'd tried giving up a couple of times before after I'd done something absurd/illegal/scary/stupid the night before, I given myself a huge hangover, but the only time it stuck was when I wasn't hungover, but was thinking hard about what I was actually doing with my life, and made the decision in a positive way on my own terms.

I don't miss it. Thought I would.
